They won't. I feel like they're just not as good as Aphex Twin and they want to keep their image of a godly band which only makes perfect (in their opinion obv) stuff. Because...what's the other reason? Other bands and musicians are not as scared to release the stuff they had made and didn't release.

I think that all the tracks he's released over the past few days were made in roughly the same period BoC's early stuff was made, and Old Tunes is just weak when compared to all that stuff. I'd take 4 Red Calx [slo] over Buckle High any day. Because...what's the other reason?

Bit strong. Emptying out of the archives like this is pretty much unheard of (who else has done that ever... FSOL maybe? Or when a musician dies and their kids want some cash). I want to hear the BoC archive as much as anyone but it says nothing about them or their motives that we havent heard it, thats just how it is for 99.9% of music.

I'm talking about releasing tracks not released on any LP or EP. Death Grips, Oneohtrix Point Never, Machinedrum, Pink Floyd, Brian Eno, The Orb, Led Zeppelin, Burial, Ceephax, Aleksi Perala are one of the many artists who are not afraid to show their "failures". It's not like there should be a 20 track leak every month or so, but nothing tells fans "we're alive" better than releasing a track once in a while

This is a really old discussion, one we've been round and round on many times.
They produce the art, they make the rules.

Harsh? Perhaps, but it doesn't look like it'll change and I, for one, appreciate them all the more for it.

The rules are dumb, because they make the fans bored. I've listened to their albums many times, I know them "by heart", and there aren't many things for me to discover except for some single melodies hidden here and there. Lush tracks are good, but after you listen to them a hundred times, you know what happens when exactly and the feeling of being overwhelmed by the details goes away. We NEED more stuff to keep us excited.

Sigh. That assumes they can churn out material like a production line while maintaining the standard you've come to expect. I do despair about the 'I want it now' mentality of the internet generation at times. Slow down. Quality, not quantity. I realise I'm talking to myself by the way lol.

I remember reading something around the Tomorrow's Harvest press about how BoC were cataloging all of their unreleased music. Something about having it there for their children when they get older? I think they're holding on to it for very respectable, valid reasons. Plus, we already have most of the leaked old tunes. It makes sense.

Aphex Twin's been speaking folklore about having a million-zillion unreleased tracks since the 90's, so this is more or less just him finally wanting to have an output for them. It makes sense.

So! Aphex Twin releases a barrel load of old stuff,and it's an utter Wankathon in Fansville. He is Brilliant and has inspired many, and I would never put him down. But some of his stuff I have listened to once or twice then hardly ever again. Boards of Canada on the other hand are a constant soundtrack for me (along with many other genres of music)and yes I love them,but in some cases it's clear to see Familiarity Breeds Contempt. Yes everyone should be entitled to their say, freedom of speech and all that... If BOC decide to release back catalogue ,then brilliant , they will no doubt do it when they are good and ready to and hopefully we will all be happy with that just as the many afx fans have been over the last few days. No doubt I will be on the receiving end of some bad language now. Or are we all Adults in this community

They've made 100 tracks for Geogaddi alone, I think

4 years of work between MHTRTC and Geogaddi, 25 tracks per year- that's as many as 2 LPs. They can release some of that stuff

No, it's just a surprise for the fans for being awesome

So let me pose a question at this point. They've mentioned having alot of material that's not been released, that much is true, but why do you think they haven't seen fit to release it?

They're afraid. MDG mentioned a boxset coming out in 2009 I think. It's 2015 now. They don't want to "ruin their image"

It's not entirely unheard of. Robert Pollard has put out three Suitcase boxsets of unreleased Guided By Voices songs. 100 songs apiece, 300 songs in total. A total dream for any fan.

I hope we get a similar release from BoC someday, but it's been "in the works, really!" for longer than I've been on these forums, so I'm not holding my breath.

I feel like they don't really care about the fans. I know they've said lots of times that they try to make music not influenced by other people's opinions, but this is...fucking extreme at this point. Most of us here like Old Tunes, there's this one guy who never listened to it because he's waiting for a commercial release, most of us here would buy casette tapes/CDs/vinyl of the Old Tunes/pre-Old Tunes/Boc Maxima stuff and it's a win-win situation for everyone. Fans would be happy because they could finally hear their favorite band's unreleased material in the best quality, BoC would get money and maybe some more recognition (stuff like that doesn't happen every day- but that's different from releasing a track or two once in a while)...We've been asking for a boxset since the dawn of time, and our requests always fall on deaf ears. They wouldn't even have to do anything other than give the DAT tapes to Warp, right?

But I also feel like they feel their unreleased material is absolutely shit and releasing it would be a waste of time for everyone, contrary to fans' opinions who would buy many copies of the boxsets (CD+vinyl+casettes=bosh bosh shoom shoom wollop dosh), support their musical endeavours etc etc

It's good to make music not influenced by anyone since then it's 100% you- but being completely isolated like that from your fanbase is horrible, too. I wish they would do a Boiler Room show

I don't really get this idea that they 'owe' us anything. The way I see it, they release what they want, when they want and they're perfectly entitled to do that. If I like it I'll buy it, beyond that it's not really my business. I don't think it's a matter of image, they just don't seem to have the desire to 'play the game' and I appreciate that. I would do exactly the same in their position.
Conversely, Aphex Twin is famed for his lack of quality control, putting volumes of stuff out there, but it's borne of the same don't-give-a-fuck attitude and I appreciate that as well.
When unreleased material appears from bands, too often it seems like a record company cash in. Whether a band releases loads of stuff or very little is irrelevant to me, what's important is the motivation behind it - integrity is key.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't get why you want to be 'cared' about. I could well be in the minority in that I don't really buy into the idea of a relationship between an artist and their fans.
Personally, what I've paid for their music is miniscule in comparison to the pleasure it's given me, so I certainly don't feel like they owe me anything.
