What is your favourite or recomendations? Here are 5 of my favorite or most nostalgic video game listening experiences (Although there are manymore).

1) Ico - Heal (when saving a game) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jcKQqZLbJk So nostaglic and almost BoCish.. Beautiful plus I couldnt reccomend the game enough, really underrated.

2) Donkey Kong country - under water theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKAc3nYEatw

3) Original XCOM Ufo defense - Battle scape musichttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoD1nA6 ... fzik#t=201 - This was so atmospheric and terrifying at the time haha

4) Final Fantasy 7 - Main theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UARM4q7hHU - Back in 1997 This was pretty much the theme of my life lol. Spent many hours playing this game.

5) Guild wars - Eye of the storm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ph69o2lurEY Its weird, if you didnt play the game you may think the music sucks but if you spent a good part of your life addicted to the game, the music is nostalgic as hell.

Manhunt

Jazz Jackrabbit had a kick ass soundtrack. I remember it was one of the reasons why I played that game as a kid. Also, both LBA games had incredible music as well. The music on the intro video of LBA2 gave me chills.

I have a habit of muting game music so I can pick whatever music I choose, but recently, I've been giving game soundtracks a better chance to allow myself a more wholesome experience. As such, here's some of my favourites:

Holy shit! Did he write that main melody himself, I can swear I've hear it somewhere else but can't put my finger on it, but might be classical music. Just crazy good writing I'm asuming. That's incredible. Bravo!

Indeed he did. Back in the day, Rob Hubbard was THE man for music on the C64. Look him up, especially his work on Commando, Sanxion, etc, although go do a search and pick up some gems. The guy was as prolific as he was talented

I think if I'm going to be totally honest with my self, this track probably planted the seed for my love of music later on in life:



Particularly at 3:20. Play it on speakers as loud as possible.

The quality and love that the composer poured into that soundtrack so far surpasses the quality of the game itself, it is almost comical.

I've been waiting for a thread like this to come along so I can share that section in particular.

Rob Hubbard was indeed the man. The C64 didn't really have a way to say "play this note for this long" like most home computers, it had the chip and you had to program the music, and the PLAYER yourself. It's like having to make your own synths before you could play.

My fave of his was Thundercats

LED Storm -
Pulsator - (Spectrum +3s had their audio wired wrong so everything was overdriven. In the day this sounded like grungy electric guitar sounds).
Super Ghouls and Ghosts - Loved the whole thing but I especially liked Ice Forest for some reason

I grew up with Donkey Kong Country, Spider-man 2: Sinister Six, and Mario Brothers on my Gameboy Color and many of the Sonic games on Genesis. Sometimes I would just sit there for hours listening to the music. If a game didn't have a sound test I wouldn't play it very often.

Not really into 8-bit or video games but I remember playing this and liking the music:

Ah - there's lots of good music I've heard in video games over the games but I'm going to have to go with what first comes to mind here...

Streets Of Rage series (1991 - 1994):





The first two games' soundtracks in the early 1990s had their finger on the pulse, with a lot of House vibes from the Sega Mega Drive's Yamaha FM chip - which, given some of the popular tunes of the era made use of Yamaha FM synths proper, was arguably the best hardware for that particular sound. Had it originated on any other console, I don't think it would have done it as much justice as the Mega Drive.

However... For the 3rd entry, the style and approach to composition was changed quite a bit... From the reviews I've seen and heard over the years, was not as well-received... But it was quite radical stuff with its fast tempo beats and erratic generated patterns; interesting to listen to in a whole different way. However there were a few tunes that are a bit more reined-in and controlled (I would guess much less automated) that had some of the composition qualities of the previous two games.

Tekken 3 PlayStation Remixes (1998)



Some stand out for stylistic reasons, rather than catchy melodies or such - I can't think of many titles I've played with original music where the whole soundtrack at time of release technically sounds so contemporary as to be almost ahead of the game (excuse the pun)... But when Tekken 3 got ported to the PlayStation in the late 90s with exclusive remixes, it was something else - and a shock of the new compared with the previous games (which had some catchy tunes, but the instrumentation wasn't on a par with modern styles) - this had a real cutting edge. I'd been used to most other game music sounding either conventional for the genre or limited in some way or another... But at the time it genuinely felt like it was pushing forward on all counts (and in retrospect, looking at the possible influences, I reckon it was at least remarkably on-point for no later than 1998. I'd still struggle to try and categorise some of the tracks...)

Sometimes I just like games for their use of sound and music as part of the experience (Rez for example) and others for how well they convey mood and emotion... I'm not a huge RPG fan on the whole, but I played Final Fantasy VIII and X respectively; definitely always a great range of style - and importantly, mood - in those soundtracks that capture the feel of a location or moment.

There were some cute and (possibly annoyingly) catchy 8-bit tunes in games I played in the 80s, even if they didn't wow... I might post some for nostalgia sake, if I can remember exactly what the games / levels were...

Lots an LOTS of 16-bit era chiptunes. SO MANY SNES soundtracks that were amazing.

In terms of soundtracks when they started just using normal audio files, I love the Jet Set Radio soundtracks, love the Half-Life soundtrack (though it's only available in poor quality) and love all the Halo soundtracks.
