Because of their record.
Look at their masterpieces, Geogaddi and MHTRTC. Are these good albums? Yes.

But what about all these Demos? From what we've heard we liked them, but are they like that? Probably not. What if it turns out all the Demo's are crap, and mostly just teenagers messing about with a 4-track machine and some synths? What If...?

Sure, we can all speculate, but this is what I belive. BOC want to keep a clean slate. They don't want to mess it all up by relesing some shit demos, or else they'll think their fucked. I think BOC are perfectionist, I mean how long did it take TH to come out? So maybe this is why there hesitant to speak about them. And I know they were put on the EHX website, but i think those were the best ones, and the crap ones weren't selected.

I would love to hear the demos (everybody would), but come on, why do we have to wait this long?

BoC have not released the old stuff because it was leaked and my guess is that they aren't exactly happy about it.

I don't think so, for reference I point you to the only confirmed samples that exist from them (Duffy, Circle, Wouldn't You Like To Be Free) and the unconfirmed but almost certain "5D" (Track 6 on side A of the Random 35 Track Tape)

Really what I don't get is why it's taking so long if they are actually working on it. I mean all we're asking for is the ones we know of. (Acid Memories, Catalog 3, etc.) I don't really think anyone has asked "Give us a track from every single release you've had before BoC!" But again I can understand if it's just a personal thing and want to keep it between family and friends.

Well yeah, those are good tracks, but I feel BOC cherry-picked those samples from the best of their back catalog. Like, from what we've heard we know these are good songs. Nobody knows what the back catalog is like execpt from Mike and Marcus and their family. It may be good, it may be bad. Heaven knows what its like.

There are also probably loads of sampling copyright issues, right?

I've thought as much as well, but I think material copyrighted before I Need a Haircut can still be reproduced. That case may not be the case that actually ended sampling as it was used in hip-hop, but it set a precedent that makes albums like Paul's Boutique impossible to create today without much legal wrangling.

That being said, mdg said they owned the copyright to all of that stuff so yeah...I don't know. That could be why they were registered, as mentioned in another thread, to prove they were created before I Need a Haircut.

I half agree. I LOOVE TH, but the other albums are still phenomenal.

I agree with the OP. It's nice to listen to every once in a while, but it's just not all that great. Anyone who needs to hear it can find it online.

Probably many, many reasons of course. Great chefs may own restaurants, but might cook their best food on thanksgiving or at parties. And Even Picasso made public only a fraction of everything he ever produced.

I actually wonder about this all the time and have a kind of wacky theory about why the bros produce in that style.

It seems to me that, be it calculated or organic, the bros are clearly building a legacy and mythos. They're going for that Terrence Malick rep, perhaps. That is, letting their beautiful/impressive/unique work speak for itself while driving their most curious and obsessed fans completely nuts. It's both kinda selfish and totally selfless at the same time and might help further immortalize their music for crate-diggers (or itunes shoppers) a couple hundred years from now (assuming turntables still work after the collapse). I think they want their legacy to be that of generations and generations of re-discovery. This might be opposed to the goals of superstars of our time, like Yeezy, D'Angelo (if he wasn't seen as a genius before he will be after that last album and the upcoming tour), Nirvana (little late, but if not them than surely Foo Fighters), Kendrick Lamaar, U2, Daft Punk, Beyonce, Lorde, Nine Inch Nails, and Radiohead, most of whom will probably be in the lexicon decades from now the way The Beatles, MJ, Led Zeppelin, Queen, James Brown, and Pink Floyd are today. But, be it out of humbleness or chessmove, seems like the bros are more than content with having their albums being quietly downloaded, found or borrowed by future generations of kids who are bored of maximalist pop anthems and want to immerse themselves in something more personal in regards to their taste and emotions.

Maybe fifty years from now, frustrated over the fact that the bros only released six or seven albums that are sitting on mountains of unreleased material, the Sandison estate might catch wind of the melancholy and dissatisfaction among their fan base. And then, after digging through their father's unreleased memoirs, their kids find a note in fine print with a vague statement in their fathers' esoteric style that suggests the goldmine of unreleased material is theirs to do with how they like. So the cousins don their departed fathers' dusty beanies and begin resurrecting Acid Memories, Play by Numbers, and amazing shit that nobody even knew about. Each album posthumously released every three or seven years, much like the current work. More inquisitive and sensitive youngsters are inducted into the Sandison extended family of BOC fans. And so it all comes back full circle - yes, music does, indeed, have the right to children. And since I am very drunk and an unsure of how pretentious this sounds, I will stop here and visit my REM paracosm of my own for now. Cheers.
