Have you ever listened to the Craig Charles Funk and Soul show on BBC 6 music? It's simply fantastic.

Still rocking my stereo many years after finishing it.

Brazilian funk (late 60s/70s):

This is an amazing album. One comment on there that I like compares it to Stereolab, and it is right they do share similar mixing and approach to instrumental music.

I'm very much into this type of music.
Not just the blaxploitation Black Dynamite/Coffy soundtrack style stuff, but synth funk, soul, gospel, rare groove, international stuff.
All good.

For good compilations, reissue label Numero Group are brilliant. in 2013 they released the Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound compilation, which grabs some of the best funk from the late 70's early 80's, illustrating the sound which Prince came out of and went on to define.
Since it's early 80's, there is quite a bit of synth funk and disco on it, but there are great soulful funk cuts like this one;



Numero also have a compilation series called "Eccentric Soul", which documents the rosters of small labels dedicated to soul and funk in the 60's, 70's and 80's. As the name implies, it's more soul than funk. but I heartily recommend it for anyone interested in the sound.

Also want to mention the compilation Loving on the Flip Side from another reissue label Now Again records, Once again, probably more on the side of soul than flat out funk, but it's another brilliant compilation, and contains a track which might be in my top 5 of all time;


I'll definitely be back, because lately this stuff has been my bread and butter, over half of the music I've listened to in the past year is this kind of stuff.

Yeah, I'd thought that too until I saw it posted somewhere else a while ago. It's just fantastic.

Going to post an obvious one, in a personal way just right for a BOC forum, because it takes me right back to being a kid - one of my dad's favourites and always on the record player. Also, the production/recording of it just sounds incredible.

The Head Hunters version of Chameleon is one of the best pieces of music to exist, from the laid back intro, Herbie's warped out solo, to the second half where it becomes this groove led jam, which leads into this section where they play more and more frantically until they just have this part of climactic release, and them boom, right back to the beginning again.

Its structure is amazing, and the fact it's culled from a jam is even more amazing. It's a beautiful track, and despite being a standard which can be covered and reworked in as many ways as people want, it's definitely the ultimate version, better than anyone else could do or ever would do.

Something more recent. Filled with funk!

That last one is from the Blue Note Revisited compilation that someone on this board recommended me in the laid back instrumental hip hop thread.

So friggin' funky you can smell it.

The original of that song is really cool, Mechanism.

It's like as if the classic exotica composers Esquivel or Martin Denny doing something really funky.

Good old latin rare groove.

Only online version I could find was when it was played on Ceefax, but this tune 'Sunburned Hip' by Himiko Kikuchi is seriously funky, check out the ridiculous guitar solo. Man, I miss Ceefax.
