I don't know if anyone else has ever tried this, but I realized that "Slow This Bird Down" might actually refer to the song itself. So I sped it up to 45rpm from 33 1/3rpm and this is the result: http://www.mediafire.com/listen/1u0rw2d ... _45rpm.mp3
I think that this song was created at 45rpm and then slowed down. At 45, the kick sounds like an 808 kick and the snare sounds like one from the amen break. Also, the guitar outro sounds much more natural sped up. What do you guys think?

I agree. I guess the word I should have used was "normal"? Like the guitar outro at 45rpm sounds like it was actually played at that speed, while the 33 1/3 version sounds slowed down.

Always kind of assumed this was the case to be honest but good to see someone taking the tine to check it out.

Am I the first person to post this idea? I was hesitating posting it because I thought it would be one of those things that's brought up again and again.

Mike also mentioned in a interview something along the lines of TCH being a pop record and I'm pretty sure he referred to how it sounds sped up.

Usually the speed up / slow down stuff is "meh" to me at best. But I like this one

I made a duplicate of CH and sped all of the tracks up in Audacity. Hey Saturday Sun, Peacock Tail, and Dayvan Cowboy sound the best to me. The second half of the record sounds better than the first when sped up.

Was recently thinking about this and messing with the song a lot to try and find the exact speed it was originally. It's probably safe to assume playing the song at 45RPM/a 35% increase in speed is close but still an approximate since they don't record to vinyl. Campfire's use of computers after BoC had previously swore them off for the production of Geogaddi provide the same sort element that MHTRTC has of distinction between tracks involving something like Logic (and whatever other software they may use we don't know about) and those recorded/arranged traditionally. Unlike MHTRTC though, where that difference between tracks (Telephasic Workshop and Color of the Fire in example) is night and day, Campfire lacks that whole sort of compilation feel with its higher clarity. It's way more cohesive, understandably as their fourth commercial LP. Makes it much harder to determine what the original speed of the song's clearly slowed percussion was...you know, it's like not nearly as muddy or blatant as something like Audiotrack 6. I can't judge by the frequencies, only by ear. Hopefully that makes sense.

Anyways, I did realise that a number of the percussion samples were not only used earlier in the album and on Trans Canada, but years later in fact: that kick frequents on TH, while one of the metallic one shots seems to be present in Cold Earth. What ultimately was convincing to me though was the sound of the choir towards the end and - as pointed out above - the sample at the very end, the voice within it very possibly being female and not male.

Playing the song at 128.3% is, I believe, roughly that of the arrangement before it was slowed down. I could be wrong, but I feel pretty certain - give it a try. Feels more likely than 45RPM exact and brings all the elements up to where they sound "natural" in comparison with the rest of the album.

All that said, while I'm positive STBD was indeed slowed down, I don't believe it's intended to be played back at a higher speed as though that's the correct way to listen to it. Seems a very obvious and meaningful choice to slow it down and it's a better track as such IMO.

While we're on it, speeding Peacock Tail up, makes it sound like something right outta Sesame Street.

The whole of Campfire Headphase sounds amazing sped up, as well as amazing at normal speed

that sped up version of peacock tail sounds unbelievably good. it makes the track sound far more happy and innocent, where as the original track sounds extremely psychedelic and spacey.

For today...

Meh. Like most of the speed up/slow down/reverse versions it's good but just makes me want to listen to the original.
