Has there ever been a documentary on BoC? Any kind of videos or even audio interviews? Just curious, thanks.

Thanks so much! Better than nothing at all.

I've always wanted someone to do this.

Frankly if they weren't remembered in a century's time as a landmark band, I'd be very surprised. Perhaps once they are gone we will see a satisfactory account of their career, and how their upbringing influenced their music. Preferably done by a fan.

That's exactly why I asked. :]

Pitchfork did a nice doc about Slowdive's Souvlaki. I wish they could do one on BoC about their history and the process of making their music rather than focus on one album.

Please don't ever wish for Pitchfork to become involved in anything. Why would you ever want that?

Yeah last thing you want is someone coming in and doing a bad job of it but splashing enough money on it people go 'you want to make another BoC documentary,? But theres already been one'

I'm pretty sure they've filmed their entire journey. Maybe one day we'll see something self released that will have complete integrity.

What, as in all the significant points in their lives and careers? Erm

Pretty sure they've got some super 8 footage of their time in Canada though somewhere.

BoC would never let a source like pitchfork or something similar create anything like that... EVER. that is part of the magick... the persistence in not being exposed that way. and thank god there are still people like BoC with that commitment to not become over exposed or 'curated' through some 'cultured media'. that would be awful!

BoC is just the tip of the iceberg as they've said so hopefully there will be some more detailed film projects in the future.

remember the devil is in the details...

I would really love this to happen. But as said above, nothing to do with Pitchfork.

The Aphex Syro interview was done very well, I admit that (through gritted teeth), but the less that website has to do with my favorite bands the better.

The Souvlaki doc was basically a Slowdive biography, but they inexplicably ignored Pygmalion. Simon Scott (I think) mentioned it quickly, but aside from that you'd think that the band broke up after the Souvlaki tour. Also, the live footage is accompanied by studio recordings. I'd hate to see what those clowns at Pitchfork would do to BoC. Probably overlook IABPOITC or something.

Glad to see we're all in agreement with no Pitchfork involvement :P

No I mean as personal documentation of their existence. We all know that they are avid film makers already, it's not a massive stretch of the imagination to consider that they've documented their lives as well as the world around them.

I feel that an in depth BoC doco would only work once they had chosen not to make music together under the BoC moniker. Anything before hand would kind of ruin their aesthetic. It's like Burial if came out of the shadows and started doing interviews and press.
But if they done it like, announced the finalisation of the BoC name, and then released a rarities compilation in conjunction with the doco, that'd be nice.

And Aerial said that he'd like the doco to be done by a fan, I've seen fan made documentaries on music, and they can go either way. Either they can be actually probing and interesting, or they just hold their subjects on a pedestal, reciting information we already know without actually digging into what the music or the musicians are about. Anyone seen that film Beautiful Noise about the shoegaze scene of the 80's? It was fucking terrible, and you could tell it was just a guy with a camera who got a bunch of money to talk to his idols. Nothing learned, nothing gained, nothing interesting, an hour 20 wank fest.

Also why you gotta go in on Pitchfork? They're not that bad. So they get things wrong sometimes, who cares. Everyone does, that's what happens when you deal in opinions on a subjective art form.
I personally feel their "Classic" documentary series, documenting the time, the band and the feeling surrounding the recording of a particular record, is quite inspired.
All four of the records they've covered are great, and have had justice done to them. I felt the aforementioned Souvlaki doco may be the weakest, but it's because the people behind the music aren't as interesting. They were just wayward teens, the average story you've seen before.
Not like The Flaming Lips' Soft Bulletin, a psychedelic rock band on the brink of breaking up, deciding to change their sound and go with symphonic and electronic elements for their "final" record. Or Belle & Sebastian's If You're Feeling Sinister, the process of Stuart Murdoch coming out of his illness and writing a record to overcome it.

What needs to be there is a good story, you can't simply make a factual documentation of what happened. Who knows, the Sandison brothers may be boring as hell. Sure, the documentary might be fun, but if we want it to have value and rewatchability, and resonate simply beyond the fans of the music, there has to be a good story.
I don't know about anyone else but I don't want to be catered to, else that feels like what I'm watching is a forced product, that there's no real reason for it to exist outside of the fan base. That doesn't feel like a true piece of art, and knowing the brothers and how they create their music, that's not what they'd want to put their name behind.

It would be possible to do a good documentary without actually interviewing the band, thereby maintaining their 'mystique' - a kind of fan's journey-type thing, interviews with peers and people influenced by them etc.
It's been done before - I'm thinking of 'Jandek on Corwood', although I'm sure there's other examples. Don't know why it hasn't been done already, in fact BOC would make a good story, Talk Talk another obvious one, I think.

Another One on Twoism project, perhaps?

Once again, Jandek on Corwood had a great story - the story of a recluse who followed no other path except their own.
It's not like BoC's music has ever been particularly avant garde or outsider. They have an original sound, but it's not an outwardly hostile one.

I'm not saying that a BoC doco would be bad, but I'm just reinstating that there would have to be a good story behind it.

Also agree with the Talk Talk idea, I think that'd be a great doco, because the story is one of label oppression. They released Spirit of Eden and from memory their label tried to sue them for releasing an "non-commercial" record.
Obviously talking about the music would be paramount, but the story surrounding the music would create an interesting context to set the documentary in.

I agree, that's what I was getting at as well, any good documentaries I have seen go beyond their subject, touching on universal themes, sometimes bringing in the 'journey' of the documentary itself. I think the BOC 'story' is a solid enough base to launch into wider themes about nostalgia, psychogeogaphy, hauntology etc. even stuff like music production or a band's relationship with its audience could be tackled without restricting interest to just music fans.
'Senna' and 'Anvil! The story of Anvil' are two examples of documentaries that might seem on the surface to have no interest beyond fans. My wife loved both and has zero interest in either heavy metal or F1 racing, because they are just great filmmaking.

Oh I definitely agree, I just don't know if we've been exposed to enough of the BoC story to automatically think that a doc about them would be good.
Maybe some of the topics you brought up may be interesting to talk about, but I'd have to see it to believe it.

The best muso doco's I've seen are of tortured souls and people breaking at the seams.
