Hello,

I am in need of some new music, so people, what are the best recent discoveries you have made so far this year?
Can be everything, from classical to hardrock, I don't care!

These are pretty much ranked, but it's been a month or two since I've updated it so it may be old.
Reminder; I recommend ALL of these albums, they are all at the very least "great", with a good deal being fantastic, and a few being spectacular.

Not necessarily albums but people I discovered this year that I really like.
Floating Points, Chrome Sparks, Szymon, Submotion Orchestra come to mind.

The AFX release is the only one from this year that's interested me. There's so much old stuff to listen to still that there's no reason to follow all the new stuff. I can just pick through the very best things that have been recorded in the many decades before this year. There are still entire massive discographies that haven't been fully explored by me.

Courtney Barnett's Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit is one of my favorites. Good, thoughtful, Australian rock from that one girl you feel like you knew in school.

Another vouch for Hiatus Kaiyote's new album Choose Your Weapon. If you want some seriously diverse and incredible futuristic soul out of, again, Australia, look no further. Headphones highly recommended.

Father John Misty's newest drop, I Love You, Honeybear, is a great, semi-sarcastic lovey folk album if you want to be hungover on whiskey the next day - it's also just plain good.

Grrrl rock may be making a small comeback with Sleater-Kinney returning to bring us No Cities To Love. It's honestly my first listen to them, but I like what I hear and may delve deeper.

If you want about three hours of jazz that still manages to be inventive and original, check out Kamase Washington's The Epic. He's the same saxophonist that played on a lot of Flying Lotus's "You're Dead!".

Glad to see love being pushed around for Hiatus Kaiyote, and especially Jessica Pratt. That album is just about perfect, 30 minutes and doesn't to be any longer. Beautiful voice, incredible compositions, and wonderfully ethereal folk music.

The Epic is a little too daunting for me, I seriously think it's a little too much to take at once. I mean I can even take Joanna Newsom's Have One on Me every now and again, but the three hours of The Epic just... I can't do it.
It's such a huge statement, which I laud Washington for, but yeezus, he couldn't have paired it down some?

I don't think even Kamasi himself would expect people to listen to all 3 hours in one sitting. I usually go a cd at a time.

Also, I've been really into "Hear You" by toe for the past month or so. Very easy-going Math Rock/Post Rock, newest album is a bit more stripped down than their first two but I feel like that is what has made it particularly enjoyable to me.

Oh man, I didn't know toe had a new album! How the liquid shit did I miss that? (Upon looking at the release date, it looks like I was in Germany while it was released, so that's probably how.)
