Reversing Live Interludes

I'm surprised that nobody's pointed out some of these little details:

Warp10 Track 3 seems as though it was actually designed to be played in reverse, much like Dandelion or Over The Horizon Radar. The flute sample at the end was clearly played backwards, the drones in the background still sound nice, and the synth flourishes work both ways. I still don't get how the early bootleggers managed to mistake this for The Color Of The Fire.

Warp10 Track 6, by comparison, is already pretty well known. There's already a BoCpages article about the reversed vocal track, so I won't bother talking about it here. I would like to know how they did the synths in the background, though.

The notes in ATP Track 6 are played in basically the same order both forwards and backwards, and while they're clearly different the sounds themselves are very similar. Also, if you listen close enough you can hear some of the note patterns were quietly played in reverse towards the end of the track (beginning of the reversed track). The constant drone in the background sounds pretty cool in reverse too, just like the guy coughing in the middle of the track.

ATP Track 9's method of creation becomes a bit more clear when you reverse it, and the vocal samples sound like sounds an actual human mouth could make with some filtering as opposed to whatever the hell it sounded like forwards.

ATP Track 11 basically sounds exactly the same both forwards and backwards, like, it's almost a bit shocking. Also I still don't know how the early bootleggers mixed this up with A is to B as B is to C.

If we're thinking of the same thing, those are from the original song:

It's just drenched in reverb (probably early digital reverb).

You're definitely right here― to me, it sounds like a choir sample from an old ROMpler (think Korg M1 or Roland JV-1080) passed through a lowpass filter with a square wave LFO controlling the cutoff frequency.

The main pads were probably reversed, but I think the flourish was added afterwards. The flourish was probably made by running the SH-101 through some delay (probably a Roland Space Echo or something similar). You can hear a very similar flourish (same sound, different notes) in all versions of Aquarius.

Interesting stuff, for sure! I also have no idea how the bootleggers managed to mess up the track titles so badly. Even ATP Track 3 isn't really A is to B as B is to C― the notes are different. It's Flute Frum Thing, or at least a variation of it.

I just realised something...

That sample from Warp10 Track 6 comes from a record featuring Colby the Christian robot. And look at this:

“A record Marcus found in America which features a Christian robot that sang songs if you pressed a button in his stomach ("The scary part is that it was very Old Testament, slitting the throats of first born and stuff").” (from an interview with Jockey Slut http://bocpages.org/wiki/Boards_of_The_Underground)

Hmm....

I can recall thinking that a while back, but I don't think I ever actually said anything. Nice catch!

I actually did some quick research after I first read that interview, trying to see if I could find any info about the robot they mentioned― the only thing I found was Colby, but since I couldn't find anything else linking Colby and BoC (and since Colby seemed a lot less sinister than the way BoC described it) I guess I sort of figured they were talking about a different robot.

But now that we know they sampled this record, I would be willing to bet that this is what they were referring to. Besides, old warped vinyl makes everything sound creepy.

...also, that song they sampled is stuck in my head now. Thanks a lot, BoC XD

So would someone who really knows how to work the reverb and delay be able (technically speaking) to remake Warp10-06? (Which, by the way, is actually track 7 since The Smallest Weird Number is often unlisted in Warp10 bootlegs even though it comes right after Telephasic Workshop)

I'll give it a try real quick!

This was the best I could do for now: http://puu.sh/lUUF5/8c78b33311.mp3
Maybe later I'll come back to it.

Pretty good so far, keep doing what you're doing!

Thank you!
Also, I just realised that the same flourish used in Warp10 track 3 and Aquarius are also in Alpha And Omega (around the 2:54 mark). I might have a go at recreating it later.

I remember reversing one particular track (ATP?) I will find it for you in the morning, that had an intelligent sounding man speaking of the dangers of capitalism before being distorted to the extent that his voice was incomprehensible.
Will find it after I sleep. I need to sleep. Badly.

I believe this is the one you're referring to?

Sounds like a very run-of-the-mill news report, as far as I can tell nobody's had any luck tracking it down.

Colby's Clubhouse is a staple of Everything Is Terrible!

And I'll just leave this here in case you guys really want to dig deep.

Its a bit hilarious to me that its somehow easier to reverse engineer BoCs production process, crowdsource the samples from obscure dead TV shows and recreate the track from a bootleg than it appears to be to clean up a DAT and stick it on Soundcloud.

Saw this a while back when I was curious enough to actually learn what that voice was saying.

Found it interesting and probably an explanation for why can't identify so many speech samples when I punched the words into Google and only got bocpages as a result: the sources are probably often some old local news broadcast they happened to record that only now exists as a tape sitting in a drawer somewhere in Wisconsin, if at all. An example being Telephasic Workshop, I'd imagine - even if I've got "bordering Canada"/"now this is very irresponsible"/"you know this tradition"/"eight" etc. there's still no signs of any source(s) whatsoever, maybe never will be any with some samples.

Not to mention how many of their samples were custom-recorded by their friends and whatnot.

So "tape sitting in a drawer inside a bunker deep underneath the pentlands", then. Melissa Olson recording some numbers to be used for text to speech samples and reciting a slightly modified very important porno thought...idk lol

I do know that it's pretty easy to reverse engineer lots of BoC, contrary to popular belief. Ripping and uploading tapes, let alone DAT tapes? Now that's just crazy talk.

Heh, I find it highly unlikely that Melissa is the only female in the Hexagon Sun compound that they could have gotten vocal samples from.

I seem to recall one of the brothers saying in an interview that they have a long history of sampling anything and everything that caught their attention, and from anywhere. I kinda remember them saying how they would go into a store and record the sounds in there, like the beep of the cash register. Anyone else remember that? I'm having trouble finding it.

To also help Jango9's point. This is from the Northern Exposure interview from 2002 where Mike Sandison says: "The voices are sometimes from old TV shows or tapes we've made. We have a lot of stuff we've collected, going back to the early '80s. But half of the time, it's things we've had friends record especially for us. We create tapes all the time. Practically everyone we know has been roped into recording something for us at some point."

Obviously, the manly men that BoC are with all their manliness are gonna have more than one lady friend to be able to sample. I can just picture the highest romantic compliment they give to their wives being: "Of the all the people I sample, I like sampling you best, dear." To which she replies: "Orange!" Her eyes twinkling... Actually, I'm pretty sure that's what lead to their firstborns conception... Then again, my memory has been a bit unreliable lately...
