On the heels of celebrating 50 years of manufacturing Super 8 film, Kodak is launching an initiative aimed at putting Super 8 cameras into the hands of a new generation of filmmakers as well as meeting the needs of top directors, indie filmmakers and others who appreciate the art and craft of filmmaking.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Kodak will kick off its Super 8 Revival Initiative with a display of an early prototype of a new Kodak Super 8 camera that combines the classic features of a Super 8 with digital functionality as well as opportunities for visitors to shoot their own Super 8 footage and watch home movies on the Kodak CES booth (South Hall #20618).

The Kodak Super 8 Revival Initiative reaches far beyond the introduction of a new camera. The company has built a roadmap that includes a range of cameras, film development services, post production tools and more. “It is an ecosystem for film” said Jeff Clarke, Eastman Kodak Chief Executive Officer. “Following the 50th anniversary of Super 8, Kodak is providing new opportunities to enjoy and appreciate film as a medium.”

Film has generated huge buzz in Hollywood recently as the chosen medium for award-winning movie directors and blockbuster movies. Now the Kodak Super 8 Revival Initiative is being applauded by the industry’s top directors, many of whom got their start on Super 8 film.

At 7 years old, director and producer Christopher Nolan began making short movies with his father’s Super 8 camera. "The news that Kodak is enabling the next generation of filmmakers with access to an upgraded and enhanced version of the same analog technology that first made me fall in love with cinematic storytelling is unbelievably exciting,” said Nolan.

"For me, 8mm was the beginning of everything,” said Academy Award®-winning director Steven Spielberg. “When I think of 8mm, I think of the movies.”

“While any technology that allows for visual storytelling must be embraced, nothing beats film,” said JJ Abrams, writer and director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. "The fact that Kodak is building a brand new Super 8 camera is a dream come true. By launching its first Super 8 camera product in more than 30 years, Kodak is demonstrating its resolve to ensure that film plays an important role in the future of filmmakers – both professionals and amateurs. This product, like many in Kodak’s history, will be a tool for artists and all those who aim to capture special moments.

As one of the first American companies to recognize the value of industrial design, Kodak has engaged with Yves Béhar, design entrepreneur and founder of Fuseproject, to ensure that the new Kodak Super 8 camera design echoes the look and feel of the original Kodak Super 8 camera, introduced in 1965, while adding a modern sensibility.

While I'm generally cautious about the massive analog circlejerk that's been going on over the last five years or so, this camera is drop dead sexy. Given all the features it has (digital viewfinder, usb, etc.) am I right to assume that it's making a digital scan of the film as you're filming?

Yep, the "cool" cycle is as predictable as it is fickle. It's everywhere in regards to A/V stuff, especially in music production. It's really evident in the synthesizer market lately. Look at the prevalence of "80's" sounding synths in music right now; a few years ago old digital synths like the ESQ-1 or Alpha Juno could be picked up for a couple hundred bucks or less, and were generally regarded asold entry-level junk. Now I've seen both on ebay for upwards of $800.00. Same consumers, same hardware; different fad.

If that's true, perhaps i'll be waiting a few years until the fad dies off so i can finally buy a synth !

It takes virtually any lens from PL- FD, all you need is a c mount adapter and simultaneously captures SD video and sound on a SD Card. That's awesome because you have a video copy of exactly what you shot, which was always the most frustrating part of shooting 8mm. The same stocks that have been available since 2010 will still be sold but there will be a new stocks coming out in late 2016-2018. The downside is that it's still kinda expensive to shoot $50-75, but that does include HD telecine. Overall i'm very happy about this second analog renaissance.

Call me a negative nancy, and I sure love super-8, but this is probably going to suck dicks. They should just start developing film for it again, not "Initiate a Revival (TM)".

I believe they are, all current stocks will now include a scanned video of your film for editing and they will also mail you back your cartridge. Also new film stocks are coming too. You can still use wacky Russian stocks like winterchrome but you will have to get it scanned separately. The only drawback to me is cost $50-75 a cartridge is expensive for only 2 min. Sadly that's the price to keep film alive though until this gets more popular.

Tacky. Might be a good camera, LOOKS like a damn good camera and if you're not one of the 'revival' hipsters, you just want a good camera and managed to get through that first paragraph without going "wow, that's horribly pretentious" then yeah, go for it, but whatever - ultimately the point is redundant. Just get a real one. I would get a real one since I'm sure these are expensive to begin with. Shoot on real film, newly made or old and sealed but do it for real camera wise or fuck off if your intention is little more than "oh look at me analogue loloolooooooolol so hip just listened to the black queen all day man".
