Thats cool. Bothered me that the lack of supply of these was making prices so high, theres always gonna be a need for them and theyre sturdy players.

Yeah, phrases like 'limited run' are being used. I smell a cash in, sadly.

I've seen $4000 dollars thrown around on Hi Fi sites. They are great turntables, and their direct drive is unmatched for mixing, but if you just want to play vinyl and not mix then you can find great TT's at far cheaper prices which do a similar or better job.

I agree fujee, there are much better sounding decks around for far less than their rrp was. I remember doing a direct comparison back in the late 90s with a £200 Project turntable, and the difference wasn't small, and that was using a decent cart on the 1210 - things get worse when people use the usual Stantons etc.

I can't see it being $4000, which would make it £3-4K over in the UK, depending on the greed and confidence of the UK arm of Technics/Panasonic.

This is what I read, hopefully they release an affordable version.. you can get a pair of originals for far less than this RRP. Insanity.

In fact, Technics has announced two new (but very similar) turntables. First to go on sale this summer will be the SL-1200GAE. It's a 50th anniversary special edition model that will be limited to 1200 turntables, all individually numbered. This will then be followed by the SL-1200G turntable.

The limited edition will sport a slightly different finish, a numbered platter, slight tweaks to the feet and a magnesium tonearm (as opposed to aluminium on the standard model). Otherwise, the decks are the same.

We're told both models will cost the same, which is round $4000 - more than three times the typical SL-1200 price of previous generations.

I'm a regular poster on WHF's forum, but admittedly I hadn't read the full news story. That changes things. The limited ones will be snapped up by crazy collectors, but I can't see the general sale ones selling for between £3-4K in the UK. That territory is dominated by the likes of Michell Engineering's Orbe SE turntable, which are going to walk all over 1200s unless they've improved them somewhat since the earlier 1210s. But then again, Technics' comeback to the separates market hasn't really done anything either - basically because they priced themselves well out of the market.

I'm guessing their research tells them that DJs with vinyl collections are older and established/successful enough to be able to afford these and so they can charge a premium.
Same idea as big 60s and 70s bands charging £80+ for reunion tour tickets - their baby boomer fans have the money to pay that price.
Still taking the piss, though.

Agreed, and Michell Engineering TTs are a thing of beauty, I'd much rather have one of those at this point. To be brutally honest, barely anyone mixes vinyl now anyway, it's all CDJ's as they eliminate a million headaches for DJ's and nightclubs. These will be bought by rich nostalgic collectors. I'll stick with my Rega.
