Anyone seen it yet?

It's got some serious hype.

Some calling it one of the best!

Suitable for a (nearly) six year old Star Wars fan?

No. But someone said that Alien Covenant trailer should be premiered today, possible on Rogue One, anyone saw it already?

Having the originals on videotape and watching them religiously meant that any hope I had left for future installments as a child died with the phantom menace.

It's disney now.

Fucking disney.

Seen it twice already. The film is great and a grower.


Great to see that Disney continues to be a safer set of hands than George Lucas.

It's a fair point he makes.

Best Star Wars film since Return of the Jedi, and even then I'd need to watch Return again to be sure. Could be shortened a bit, but homages in there to classic sci-fi (other than Star Wars, obviously), martial arts movies and Vietnam and WW2 movies, great stuff.

Is Donnie Yen awesome in this or not? This is a deciding factor for me seeing it in the theater or waiting to catch it on demand.

It's good. I'd agree with the above that it's the best since Return of the Jedi.

I liked this equally as well as The Force Awakens, which I think was far and away better than Lucas's last 3 installments. Abrams et al are doing a better job of these.

Curiously, though, I didn't feel any great pull to see this one again. Don't know what that says about the movie.

I enjoyed it, but had to refrain from tearing it to shreds while I was watching. None of the characters had enough real development for me to really care what was happening. Theres a lot to say about it, but I'll keep it to a couple main things that stuck out:

-The crystal that she wears. what the fuck was that? It was like a major red herring that felt more lazy than intentional. Somewhere on the cutting room floor, there has got to be some footage of blind ip man using it for his final beat down. My god, he even holds the cane like a sword in that scene.
-And the ending. We all knew it was a side story, but linking it up directly to "A New Hope" felt unnecessary. To a point, I feel like it negated the importance of even having it's own story. Maybe if it was connected off-camera. But the moment it cut directly to being a different movie, I felt like it was almost saying "that shit didnt really matter though, lets get to what we ALL came here for. The original trilogy."

Answer: Donnie Yen is always awesome, Rogue One included. Side note: One of my favourite scenes with him is in the beginning of Hero.

Perch: That necklace she wears that her mother gave her is a kyber crystal. It's the force-powered "gem" used in lightsabers. That's why Donnie Yen's character, Chirrut, felt it from a distance as Jyn was walking nearby. Chirrut was a former guardian of a kyber temple, so was familiar with the feeling of the crystals and is why he's also familiar with the force itself (in a different way than the jedi).
I have to disagree with your second point/finding/opinion. I felt the whole movie was showing how important the story of that short explanation they gave in A New Hope was of how the death star's plans were acquired for the rebellion. While simultaneously patching up a plot hole so bad it's been joked about since 1977. I felt it fits right in to the Star Wars film saga and in a different way than any of the other films.

I like this better than The Force Awakens and the prequels and agree that it's the best since RotJ.

I know that the crystal came back up at at least one point, but they chose to emphasize it so strongly that I really thought they would do something else with it. Maybe they were just trying to avoid that cliche?

And I definitely see what you mean with why it connects. I think I'm just weary of fan service, and it felt really heavy handed to me. That and I still feel like it could have happened off-screen and still been able to show you the importance of their actions. Really goofy, and left field comparison, but sort of in the way that wicked connects to wizard of oz. The scenes that connect to the original story are not retold shot-for-shot, and even extend afterwards to bring it back home to the new story. Granted we cant do that in rogue one, for obvious reasons..

Anyways, as you said, it does fit right in. I think I just went in there wanting a really great self-enclosed side story like the kind we used to see in stuff like kotor and other games/books, but after I realized that everything is being written just to be plugged cleanly into a new hope with no leftovers, it ceased to have as much meaning to me.

Just a difference of opinion.

Thanks! Donnie Yen is awesome and I agree about Hero. That flick and the Ip Man series made me a fan for life.

I saw it it and as for it was boring. I can't understand how it was so high rated....
