Very true, man.

It is one of their most 'in your face' singles in a long time.

They had a big impact on me right before Exciter was released so I keep checking in on them. It is probably because I'm older, but I tend to agree. They don't hook me like they used to. Different life experiences.

The main thing that keeps me coming back is their sound. They still do some great synth work. I also enjoy hearing the effect different producers have on that sound. Finally, I try to connect some of their sounds with older albums. It's a weird game I play.

i have not checked out any of their new material. to be honest, i really haven't given any of their newer material any listen in years. the last album i really got into by them was "playing the angel", which is absolutely beautiful

depeche mode are definitely one of my all time favorites, they are one of the few bands who can pull off emotional music with an upbeat dance-like vibe. my favorites are violator, playing the angel, songs of faith and devotion, and ultra.

i think ultra is the most underrated album in their discography.

Ultra was a cracker. Barrell of a Gun is them at their seedy, sick best.

In all seriousness, Blasphemous Rumours, Fly on the Windscreen, People are People, Stripped, and so on ad naseum, are some of the best songs I've ever heard.

I put Black Celebration on par with Violator. I love them both pretty much equally.
Stripped is probably in my top 3 DM tracks. It is a fucking work of genius.

Ooh! Excited for this album. Both of you are right about your trifecta albums, they were both two great eras of DM. I thought they fell off a bit in recent years but Delta Machine was a pretty solid album after all of that and I caught that tour which was amazing live.

The video is classic Anton. The black and white, getting the guys to do goofy and awkward shit, the way shots are framed. Good stuff.

I consider Some Great Reward one of my auditory Bibles.

The only record by them I couldn't stomach was Exciter. Everything else is worth checking out and amazing!

While I doubt we'll ever see a DM album that's as consistently good from start to finish as Violator is, there's always a few standout tracks you can pull from the new, otherwise mediocre albums. Sounds Of The Universe had "Peace" and "In Sympathy." Extracting anything redeeming off Delta Machine was a little tougher but at least there was "The Child Inside," one of those classic Martin Gore ballads (though its a bit cloying.) The best thing from the Delta Machine era wasn't even on the album: the amazing "Heaven" b-side "All That's Mine." I expect Spirit will be yet another collection of mostly routine, plodding songs about anguish, betrayal and vague spirituality sprinkled with a small handful of miraculously decent tracks that will ascend into the canon.

Agree entirely that there are still some gems amongst the average in their newer work. I'll always have a soft spot for The Dead of Night for example, as they opened with it the one time I saw them live up in Manchester. I could see backstage as the intro rolled, and there was Dave Gahan silhouetted and whirling like a dervish as he waited to make his entrance. Electric!

All of this is true. DM have been "my band" since high school (yes, I'm old as dirt) and those three albums got me through what was a nearly unbearable, private school education experience. This new track from them is better than more recent work.

Edited to add that the one off single from that era, Shake The Disease, approaches Godhead, Trinity-like perfection.

That would have been the Exciter tour, correct? I saw them live then, too. That is one of the best songs on that album and one of the heavier in their catalog. I really enjoy it. Several others are great, but not their best album I suppose.

They put on an amazing show.

Looks like the little lady bought tickets for their next tour. Haven't seen them since Exciter. Should be fun.
