Could this be a Catalog 3 track? (OFFICIAL BOC)

Ok, so hear me out. Catalog 3 is described as "generally uneventful ambient electronic music". This seems to fit the bill - I know it doesn't fit any times on Catalog 3 that were put on the website, but it's very likely that this is just a snippet of one of the songs. One of the reasons I think this could be off Catalog 3 is due to the extremely early sound of it, the strong cassette hiss, the synths are mid 1980s sounding and don't sound like later BoC works, and is generally uneventful ambient electronic. Shazam provides no result, along with AHA Music. I am 87% this is a Catalog 3 track. Tell me your thoughts on it.

Why would they have to use a version of a song they own from a tape when the song is theirs? That would imply they no longer have the original masters and had to take the song from a tape. Why would they no longer have the masters of their own music? How would they still have a copy of a tape they made over two decades ago? That would imply the tape still exists in one form or another and that someone still has one. From what I remember, many of the songs on Societas had to be identified by hand. There is no reason to believe the inability to identify the track using software implies it is an unreleased track. Having said all that, it does sound like a Boards song. In fact, it sounds enough like their other songs to be one of the songs they cannibalized later on in their career. Not trying to harsh your buzz or anything, but I just think we've squeezed about all we can out of Societas with what we have at our disposal.

Tbh this sounds like a tape release from some US new age/ambient pioneer in the 80s. There's tons of music like this and lots of it can't be found online. Could be something off those tapes.

While I agree with you, it sounds way too close to home. The character of the synth, the sound effects...
It sounds like something you could hear on Random 35.
As for the hiss, well, perhaps this was one of their pre-4track, pre-DAT recordings? A recording from their "dual cassette deck bouncing days".
If I assume that, then this must be from 83-86 something?

I've thought ever since the SXT Broadcast that they used parts of this piece in XYZ. Especially the intro and outro.

YESSSSSSS! Great job by the Bros with the Societas mixtape!!

A new tape would be at least as good as a new album, IMHO.

Heck, I even like it more than Geogaddy and Music Has the Right to Children!!

I am really looking forward to them releasing a new tape.

On a second thought, I don't think I like Societas more than Geogaddy. I like it more or less the same. It depends on the day.
