I thought I'd make this thread just to celebrate 20 years of ABPOITC, which is coming up on November 27th. This EP stands out to me because it showed that BOC had an axe to grind with humanity and they did so with some truly lovely music. Kid For Today gives me chills to this day.

Contains some of my favorite songs by Boards (so actually some of my favorite songs altogether!)

I’ve always had a close connection to this one. I grew up in a speaking in tongues voodoo Christian free evangelical household. It wasn’t until I my late teens that I broke away from the family beliefs. The religious/cult connotations resonate deeply.
I even got “In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country” tattooed across my chest a few years ago. Almost like an inside joke to my own upbringing, and a way for me to spread the “good word” when people ask.

This is the album that got me into Boards! While it isn't my favorite album, its probably the most important one to me. Without it, I don't think I would have discovered this wonderful world of music. I really hope Warp does something special.

The first step they've done is at least acknowledge it by repressing MHTRTC for that date. They also restocked MHTRTC shirts on the 20th. Perhaps they're anticipating a large amount of attention for BOC on the 27th and are capitalizing on it.


On a side note, I also really want to discuss the great artwork for Beautiful Place. It's been the source for countless avatars on this forum. I also like how subversive it is. There's tons of nostalgic, educational looking images but there's also a secret David Koresh eye slipped in to showcase a sinister undercurrent to the world. Even during our childhoods, there was still some dark/odd shit going on in the grown up world, we just didn't pay any attention to it.

Yeah, fantastic little EP.

ABR and the title track are definitely among my favourite BoC tunes ever.

More represses and more t-shirts for everybody. And easy money for Warp and The Bros.

I am glad they are milking the cow. They deserve more money. Why not?

Are they reprinting a poster too?

I personally think it's funny that they're repressing items from the 2018 anniversary for Music.

Bottom of the barrel doesn't even begin to describe what they're doing.

That said, they can't possibly think that this is what fans truly want, can they? Maybe we might get an announcement.

Ah yes, the EP with my favourite BoC song of all time on it (Kid For Today).
And also the EP with my LEAST favourite BoC song of all time on it (Zoetrope).

Oh, yes. They do know what fans really want. That little Societas Mixtape has been a blessing for anybody that loves BoC. It has been playing in my cassette player repeteadly all the way since the date it was released in February 29th 2017.

I think you should write to Warp with your grievances. They'll probably say, "We know. We signed them."

That said, I'll have faith they aren't that cheap. They're supposedly a company of artistic integrity. And repressing stuff from 2 years ago, isn't really a move that's got a lot of integrity. Artistic or otherwise.

Yeah, I'm not a Zoetrope fan. Definitely the weakest thing BOC did in their classic era, It makes me think of a colorful, little light show in a dimly lit room, so I guess in a way, it's still evocative.

Zoetrope actually works better in the context of the Warp 99 show as a nice warm up for the rest of the show. I can imagine they projected some nice patterns as it played.

Could not disagree more about Zoetrope; to me it evokes a beautiful childhood memory, sweet and beautiful, fading in and out, and unexpectedly vanishing.

If they had been rolling out an array of new merchandise (clocks, mugs, hats, pencils, onesies, etc.) every year since Tomorrow's Harvest came out, I'd say you'd have a point, but printing more t-shirts (that were never promoted as being limited edition in the first place) is likely a result of fan demand.

If your local deli counter ran out of bread, and one day they got some more bread in, would you spit on them for having zero credibility? or would you say "cool, more people can eat bread now"

Bakeries sell bread. Is Warp known for selling t-shirts? Nope. We all want a new album, not a t-shirt.
On top of that, the t-shirts they are selling aren't new either. Nothing new at my local bakery. Everything is old, hard and moldy. And expensive.

On top of that, the t-shirts they are selling aren't new either. Nothing new at my local bakery. Everything is old, hard and moldy. And expensive.

Merch is part and parcel of the music business though. In terms of income, it probably has the same importance as music releases - possibly more? I'd assume it allows many artists to continue making a living from doing what they love, especially in the age of streaming.

Warp have never gone too overboard on the merch side of things. The Aphex retail opportunity from a couple years back is probably the closest they've been to 'cashing in' on something, but even that was fairly tame in comparison to what I've seen from other artists/labels.

Just imagine if, once those t-shirts originally sold out, Warp didn't choose to re-stock them. Where else could people find BoC merch? Unofficial outlets with 0% royalty payments. Boards clearly aren't ready to release new music, so at least by making sure the Bleep warehouse is stocked, fans have the option to buy merch that can aid the brothers financially, until they are ready.

Imagine being so salty that a new album hasn't come out yet that you trash the label for making sure t-shirts are in stock.

I want a new record too, but come on, there are plenty of folks out there who want shirts and physical copies of records. I have at least 3 BoC shirts, and when I made the decision to order them, I'd have been bummed if they were out of stock because I want to support the band, not some random bootlegger.

Yeah, I bought my bootleg t-shirt since the official ones were out of stock at the time, also vinyl repress is always good news if you are into collecting or buying physical media, there's so many records I wish I could have but can't since they were never repressed again and your only option is buying them from some random person on discogs.

Sorry about that, you do have a point.

I think I more just mean, it would be sad if all they did for Beautiful Place's birthday was repress some stuff from 2 years ago. But yeah, nothing wrong with keeping stuff in stock for fans who want to buy it. I actually asked for the "two children" shirt for my birthday when it came back in stock and that's now one of my favorite shirts so I'm happy they restocked.

A repress of MHARTC? I didn't realize the initial represses from 2013 sold out. I remember us all thinking that those represses were an indefinite press to stop resellers from hawking their vinyl releases at a quadruple price.

It took me years to come around to Zoetrope, but the perspective changed for me when I listened to it in the right frame of mind.

Kid For Today and the title track are my two favorite BOC songs. IABPOITC is my go-to record to throw on from BOC. The sky blue vinyl is one of my favorite possessions in my overall vinyl collection.
