Bola - Aguilla (Darrell Fitton MHTRTC Mastering)

Playing my Bola Soup album again, for the first time in about 10 years, as a break from Inferno. When the track “Aguilla” started I was thinking, wait, is this a BOC mix? The first minute or two at least, before the drums and vocals kick in. I knew the Skam connection obviously, but looked it up and found Darrell did the mastering on MHTRTC. Also discovered he loaned Autechre their early gear.

This track Aguilla was a 7” orignally. The first few minutes or so sound kind of unlike Bola until the drums and vocals kick in, and then it becomes more like his sound.

Anyone know if there is any actual collaboration on this track? Or is it just a case of similar ideas, similar equipment at the same time?

There was some guy that somehow found the mastering notes that Mike sent to Fitton on what he wanted him to do on the mastering of MHTRTC, it was quite detailed in what compressors he wanted used etc. For some reason I can't find it anywhere though.

IIRC the notes were seen in a video called "Boards of Canada holy grail! + Vinyl Community intro & More..." uploaded to Youtube by an account called "Deaf by Records". Seems to be deleted... Heres the thumbnail:

Man, I would love to see these. I keep playing the first minute or so of Aguilla over and over now.

It really is a stunning tune and with Inferno in the rear view mirror now, this could have easily been on it. That little flute flourish in it is very BOC. Well spotted, I had never considered they had collaborated before.

Here is the other thread about it: https://www.twoism.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14288

It seems Fredd-E saved some (all?) of it and posted on instagram:

I'd never seen these before so cheers for the heads up.

Love that Mike is confirmed an Ian O'Brien fan. He's an excellent techno producer. One of my faves from that Desert Scores album:

Typically his 12" releases tend towards the more jazzy, Underground Resistance side of techno, highly recommend checking them all out.

And here's the other track he mentioned. Never heard of this artist.

I picked up that CD after those postcards first came to light. The whole album is excellent and a remains a hidden downtempo gem.

Ah! So the machine noises at the end of Kaini are an actual hidden track, not part of the song!
