I keep swinging between a few ideas:

1. Much like the GTA series, and other artists from the Skam era, BOC are just constantly taking the piss. They are trolling. Having a laugh. If you’re Scottish, it’s all ironic, it’s all about the banter. It’s Aphex Twin living in a bunker and driving a tank. It’s the “grunge slang” article.

2. On top of this, they have a database they have built of 1000 samples in different categories, and they just pull out things and put them together aesthetically using “gut instinct”. “Hey that sounds cool! This works! Yeah, let’s use this one!”

3. Alternatively, they actually sit down with a pad of paper and a coffee and think: how can we really fuck with people? What message are we going to tell and how can we tell it? “I want to say something about X” and then they go hunting for samples, references, titles they can throw in that points to something bigger they have in mind. Like constructing an iceberg. “Let’s throw in a clue about this here, let’s throw in a clue about that there”

4. They just read and research and listen to things, and when inspiration hits, they think “hey that’s cool. Maybe I can incorporate that idea into this track”. Or “hmmm, this is interesting, I wonder if I can make a track to represent this idea” and then they leave pointers to that idea in it for us to find if we are interested.

5. All of the above? Something else?

It's these references that give your music a context. Or is there more to it than just context… a message?

Marcus: It's a bit of both. Some of our tracks are using messages to lend the sound of the tune a context, to make it easier for people to understand what frame of mind we intend the track to be taken in. It can mean the difference between someone understanding our sense of irony or not. We're very conscious of what we sound like, and we have a sense of humor that can be completely missed if you don't fully understand what we're about. At the same time, we're quite serious about a lot of issues, we're politically motivated, and we're genuinely interested in a lot of cultural and scientific subjects. We do a lot of research. So, some of our tracks are putting across a very specific message.

Why would you hide the politically motivated stuff you want everyone to hear? Pretty sure they're talking about Energy Warning and One Very Important Thought there.

I like to imagine for the subliminal stuff it's a more classy version of all of noveltywave's examples. Perfectionistic but adventurous.

So is the color in "Slow This Bird Down" a metaphor for something else?

MI: The title has a double meaning. It's part of another fantasy journey that is going on in the journey that the album brings. In a superficial sense, the title sounds like something a pilot in a small plane would say. It's like a pilot finding a place to land and saying, "Okay, I'm going to loosen the speed of this small aircraft (This Bird) and land". But the meaning I really wanted to convey was that this world is in a very bad and dead-end state right now. This is true politically, technologically, and environmentally. So the title "This Bird" is really referring to this world.

What kind of vision do you want to achieve with Tomorrow's Harvest?

Marcus: I hope that it works to make the listener pause and consider where we are right now, where we’re going… I guess it’s essentially a political album, but we shouldn’t spell it all out, it’s important that the listener finds their own thing in there.

Amazing. I have read some interviews, but not those ones. I did not know they had laid out their methodology so clearly. Assuming now, in 2026 it has developed but still comes from the same roots. So “Inferno” likely is just a criticism if religion (look how all of this is making the world burn) and to look way beyond that at the much older universe, earth, that we belong to. Perhaps some personal aspect of losing family members or friends to religion. All done with a layer of irony. This also explains the complete lack of interviews around this work: they’ve made their statement with the album, no need to get words directly in print on such a touchy subject.

they've already communicated everything we need to know to approximate the intended meaning of Inferno
