first off hi there, first post!

The general consensus seems to be that the counting sample on Gyroscope is from The Conet Project, I think I may have found another CP sample on Oscar See Through Red Eye. It's a siren sound that's found throughout the whole song but most prominently at 2:13. I believe it's from Disk 3 track 2 of The Conet Project (found here called "iran iraq jamming efficacy testting irdial")

Anyway, I could be wrong but it sounded familiar. I love BOC and The Conet Project and I think those jammed stations sound especially cool.

Yep, I'm a huge fan of the Conet Project, number stations and, well, shortwave in general. On occasion I stay up reeeeeaaaal late and try to find the strangest things possible over shortwave. Wish I could just catch one some time.. if they even exist any more.

Anyway, I'll have to check out the specific track you've mentioned.

All those crazy sounds in OSTRE sound like sped up tape loops to me.

Regarding Gyroscope, do we actually know which track of The Conet Project it's from, or are we just assuming?

As far as I know the numbers stations are still around and kicking, there was a lot of activity in them after 9/11. Supposedly there's more now than there were during the cold war.

I've never found one from the Conet Project that matches up number wise, but there's always a chance they cut it up and restructured it, or maybe it's from another non CP recording of numbers stations. Knowing numbers stations though the intonation sounds like the woman who does the station called "5 dashes", there's a sample of on the CP which is disk 3 track 12.

yeah, the boys always mention corporate jingles...and some say there are in 84' pontiac dream and i think i there is one in alpha and omega...or something inspired by it...the actual times escape me now

and on a sidenote, yeah im not sticking to the topic...like i never saw the percussin supposedly made from girlfriends in eagle in your mind but i changed the pitch of the distinct i love you and you get a girls voice...?????

I am old enough to remember listening to my shortwave radio at night and wondering "what the hell" was going on with these insane numbers stations. I didn't think too much about it as I imagined some need for monotonous repetitive information in an age that antedated the internet and reliable radio communications.

It's interesting to see that the mystery lingers and that some people share my fascination 35 years later.

That's really cool and it fits in with the Trans Canada Highway album cover too, I will give those a listen and see if I can hear that. I love when artists appropriate advertising.

I have this collection of recordings I made of old advertisements from the 80's and I have such nostalgia for them and can remember every word, it's funny how someone trying to sell you hamburgers or cars can hit these weird nostalgia buttons.

I suggested to Fredd-e that it's from the film Scorpio Rising and he put it on the site.

The autistic kid in the film it keeps reciting the numbers of this code over and over, in much the same manner as heard in Gyroscope. On reflection I'm not so sure it is from that, but it's pretty close. Perhaps they just recorded the numbers stations themselves...

Sorry to re-animate an old thread but I'm also into number stations and I've been trying to identify the voice on Gyroscope. I think its from the Conet Project but from Disc 1 - Counting Control:

Sorry, meant to say that number stations are still operating today (2009) though in fewer numbers (pun not intended) than before. I've not picked one up for a while but Oblique (E11) and the Russian Man (E7) are still operational.
