Ok.. I thought about putting this on the "Random Sound" forum but I really want to ask this question from a specifically Boards of Canada perspective:

Lately I've been exploring Autechre's catalog (as I've heard they are highly respected in the idm community) and have not had a whole lot of luck finding stuff that I dig. "Clipper" is a CLASSIC, and I like "Glitch" and "Krib," but I haven't had a lot of luck outside of that. They seem to specialize in a lot of harsh noises- even more so than Aphex.

So.. question is... from the melody oriented BOC perspective, what are some good Autechre tracks?

these are sweet, but nothing like boc

Ok here it goes, I was in your shoes about a year ago, but then I finally decided to dive into AEs catolog. I would recommend downloading/ buying whole albums cause it just works better like that. I started off by downloading Confield and I was quickly turned off. It just sounded like noise to me, but I decided to em another chance and I downloaded Amber. This is the album to start with and it's still my favorite of theirs. I think it takes time to appreciate their sound and to fully get used to it. Ae now is definately one of my favorite artists. I think it's best to start at the beginning and move to the newer stuff later, some of it I still don't like. As a boc fan the albums you will probably like are;

Incunabula
Amber
Tri Repetae (disc 2 is amazing)
Chiastic Slide
Lp5
Cichli Suite

After that, I don't dig that much stuff, but maybe it will grow on me. After Lp5 they seem to focus less on atmosphere and melody and more on just harsh, fucked up noise. The track Rae off Lp5 is simply brilliant, you must hear this.

Try the album Amber, or maybe Tri Repetae.
I don't think Autechre have a lot in common with BoC though to be honest.

Thanks man, it's not custom or anything. I got it from the avatar selector in this forum cause I'm lazy.

I have to say that I'm another fan of their earlier stuff. I recently tried to get into the later albums like Confield and Draft 7.30, but they are very difficult listens. I agree with Derail's assessment that it's best to get into them by album. Any of the first three are great places to start. Incidentally, the second Tri Repetae disc is actually the Garbage and Anvil Vapre eps.

Amber and tri repetae are especially good.
Dont know how you guys remember the track names though.

Also think their last 2 albums, draft 7:30 and untilted are superb when played loud with the lights off.
The last track on both albums are fuckin awesome!

Dont think any of their stuff is particualrly boc like but then no one makes music quite like boc do they?

Autechre already made theire best albums, Incunabula, Amber, Tri Repetea and Chiastic Slide, after that they became more abstract, i'm still a big fan but i'm never that surprised again when a new album comes out.

Off topic but, does anyone know where I could find an Autechre t- shirt? They seem harder to come across than Boc ones.

You can best buy them at concerts and also watch out for obscure vinyl.

Actually, there are a few on warpmart, I think they're from the most recent tour. I've also seen some on ebay, but presumably they aren't totally legit...if that's a problem. For that matter, there's someone from Hong Kong selling a bunch of BoC shirts on ebay. They actually look pretty good, but I'm not going to chance it myself.

i bought an ae. t-shirt on their gig here in antwerp. there are a few of those left on warpmart. they are rather big, i have a large but i think i should've bought the medium
