I think there's a bit of a gender imbalance in professional musicians anyway isn't there? Maybe it's more noticable in electronic music. Wonder why.

I think there is a massive gender imbalance in many areas of music. I've often wondered if this is a case of nature or nurture: are women conditioned from an early age that they can only become a singing/dancing pop star? Or is the female thought process radically different with regards to music?

Some styles such as metal and prog are understandably male-dominated. It's obvious that these genre's are testosterone fueled with their endless guitar masturbations and competitions of who is the fastest, who has the most complex music, etc. It's not too hard to see why many woman would have no interest in that sort of thing. (Yes, I know there are a FEW exceptions, but I'm talking about the majority here.)

When it comes to electronic music I had hoped things would be different. Surely the incredible range of styles under the electronic umbrella would attract many female artists. Of course the Aphex/Autechre/braindance stuff falls dangerously close to the mentality mentioned above - endless competitions to see who can make the most twisted, complex and fastest beats imaginable. (Don't get me wrong, I love that stuff... but then again I'm male.)

But what about the ambient, downtempo, chill-out stuff... or just the plain beautiful, soulful, incredibly melodic electronic music out there. You would think that out of all that there would be something that would attract a female to become an electronic artist. Unfortunately this doesn't appear to be the case. Look at this topic - all we can come up with is a handful of female artists. How many names would we get if the question were "Where are all of the undiscovered males in electronic music?" (Uh, about a million... or so it would seem.)

So - is it nature or nurture? I would love some female input on this topic!
