There seems to be an extreme similarity between some of the percussion in the Boards "Kid for Today", and the Flaming Lips' "One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21" from Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Anyone notice this before? Don't know if the FLips sampled the Boards, the other way around, or both sampled another source...

I'd be happy to post a sample if someone needs it. It's namely the "rotating" high-end drum bit at the beginning of each track. Also interesting that the FLips track is about AI, a subject which Marcus studied in university...though most likely just coincidental.

Either way, both tracks are fucking lovely. Apologies if this has been posted before...I did a search with no matches.

Thought I'd upload a sample anyhow...most of you likely have IABPOITC, so here's a snippet from the FLips track in question.

I looped the section twice, and isolated the left channel to focus on the drum bit.

interesting. sounds very similar. consciously or unconsciously is the question. isn't the sample boc used a slide projector?

Yeah, the sample at the very beginning is a slide projector. I'm thinking more 3:02 onward, actually. You're right that the sounds are rather different, but the rhythm is remarkably similar. Maybe the Flaming Lips track just reconstructed the rhythm...possibly as a homage?

I see what you mean but it could quite easily have been subconscious, or not even related.

This is so weird that someone brought this up! Wayne Coyne lives in Oklahoma City, and I'm living in a college town south of OKC, Norman. I saw Mr. Coyne standing outside of a show in Norman because his brother's (cousin or nephew, maybe?) group was playing. Of course people were chatting it up with him, having him sign things. I decided to ask him what kind of music he was feeling at the time. Being a BOC fan I also decided to ask him if he does much listening to BOC. He said that he enjoyed the "new cd." He struggled for a minute, asking me if the album cover had a mountain(?) on it. Then he said "no wait that was Of Montreal."

Haha...nice. I suppose he's heard Boards then, but it doesn't seem like he's into them enough to sample/copy a rhythm from IABPOITC. Unless the producer or other band members had something to do with it, or Coyne just has so much to listen to that he can't keep track of new albums.

Even if it is just a coincidence, it's an interesting one though.

Well knowing wayne doesn't listen to boards much doesn't really prove anything. Most of the lips music is composed by their drummer/keyboardist/guitarist steve drozd. and a piece of the song like that was probably put in by their producer dave fridmann.

i dont even think any of montreal cds have mountains on them...

they are pretty similar. i've heard that song a million times and never noticed the similarities before.
