Call me jaded... but is anyone else here starting to get tired of this indie-beach-pop-brian-wilson-esque fascination-that-indie-seems-moored-in-atm-and-that-Pitchfork-eats-in-high-school-cheerleader-binge-quantities?

I mean, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Panda Bear and Grizzly Bear as much as anyone, but Fleet Foxes left me wondering so what? (it's on PFork's best new music) and their new Best New Music "The Ruby Suns" is described as 'sunny beach pop' and that is not at ALL encouraging to me personally.

I mean, there's nothing new under the sun, and in some sense all music is a re-exploration of old forms, but there's a strangely (for supposed rock-n-roll) extremely conservative quality to a lot of the music I hear now-a-days. Nobody seems interested in expanding the vocabulary, and indie in particular seems content to revel more in nostalgia and homages than in being 'independent' in any important artistic sense.

As far as indie goes, the Knifes and Joanna Newsoms are far few and in between.

I'm not sure how this complaint applies to the electronic scene these days.. I'll think on this one.

Well sayd...but allas...that's musical taste.

I hate pitchfork for pretending they have "the" taste...if you know what I mean.

Bubblegum Death Metal
Folk Techno
Grunge Showtunes (oh wait that's been done I think)
Gothic Ska

Most of them are already done

I'm not talking about mixing up genres...but an entire new one!

It'll be very hard to come up with a brand new genre. These days, with electronic music devices, we can pretty much produce any sound you can think of, so it's only a matter of finding a new way of arranging a song and choosing a set of sounds. I think no matter what you do, new music is going to sound at least a little bit like something else that's been done. Even BoC isn't some kind of totally original genre. (Almost, but not quite)

There may not be much new ground to break. Then again, it keeps happening every once in a while, so I guess we'll see.

I hardly agree. The limit is your soul and creativity.

I don't believe in souls, so it's creativity. But for x number of sounds there are only going to be n number of combinations that sound good. It's a huge number, but still ultimately limited.

que? We can always make new sounds. We will alway's find out new things, new instruments and new ways of playing. I strongly believe music is unlimited.

I'm glad! I know I'll be sad if absolutely eveyone runs out of new music ideas! Keep going!

hehehe i've got a few ideas why harmonizing is back in style; mainly because if you can't really play an instrument, you might as well just churn some melodies with your throat.

TD: have you listened to The Brother Kite? i think they were doing this kind of thing way before Panda Bear & Grizzly Bear so I can't really knock them, check them out!

it feels like theres a trend generally towards music being unashamedly 'poppy' in a way that a few years ago would have been considered naff, in all kinds of genres.

yeah broken social scene is great...but i wouldnt consider them beach pop

Can "BoC-esque" be a genre? I know they fit into a few genres, but nobody else really does what they do. (Some come close though, and then I beleive we actually have reffered to some as "BoC-esque") Or we could come up with a new name for it. "Sandisonic", "Hermit-pop", ???
