I was looking on youtube randomly the other day and Hurt by Jonny Cash (originally NIN) turned up which made me realise that maybe cover versions aren't always evil. So I was wondering what you guys thought was the best cover version ever...

Mine's a dead heat between Hurt and Halleluia by Jeff Buckley (Leonard Cohen). Both obvious I know. What do you guys think?

I'm pretty fond of Tori Amos' cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

It was weird to finally hear those lyrics comprehensively rendered.

Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is one of the very few songs that actually make my eyes well up. :(

Hmmmm. That release kind of (accidentally) screwed it for Beta Band though. Can't listen to it.

Thought there might be a thread like this, been enjoying Sweet Jane by Cowboy Junkies again recently, must be a contender for the greatest cover -

This has to be one of those that's possibly even better then the original -
