The MHtRtC 10 year anniversary thread got me thinking a bit. Some of you guys were quite young back then, so unless you were preternaturally precocious in your musical tastes, I'm guessing you didn't get into BoC until later.

So the question is, when did you first get into Boards of Canada? I.e. what was the most recent album when you first became a fan?

This is not "what album did you hear first" (though for most people, it probably will be), or which one is your favorite; I just want to get an idea of what the mix is between long time and more recent fans is.

Although I had heard and LOVED BoC just before MHTRTC came out. I wasnt a full fledge album owning fan just yet. That came when I managed to grab Hi Scores come 1999-2000. from there I grabbed MHTRTC, IABPOITC, and Twoism at the repress a few years later along with the Geogaddi booklet. Have kept up to date since.

Best musical decision ever.

I first got into BoC when Geogaddi was already out, but there was no word yet on what if anything BoC were doing next. The first album I heard was not Geogaddi but MHtRtC, though the first BoC songs I ever heard were Beware The Friendly Stranger and Over The Horizon Radar.

Man.. I still remember the first time I heard "In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country." That track really sealed the deal for me.

After that, I could truly say (to quote the Orb) that I'd been waiting for music like that all my life.

I found them in '06. Julie and Candy was the first song that I heard.

Didn't get into BoC until 2006. A uni mate gave me a load of random mp3s and Roygbiv and Julie and Candy were on them and I was blown away. Got MHTRTC then Geogaddi, then TCH and the rest just followed. It's completely changed my taste in music. TCH is now the most played album on my itunes.

Was really into Plaid and Broadcast and was frequently checking out new Warp releases at the listening posts at London Oxford Street HMV (not much internets about in the olden days). I remember MHTRTC being released and giving it a good listen, but, for whatever reason, I passed it over (I vaguely remember being put off by "The colour of Fire"!!).

But I definitely picked up "In a Beautiful Place in the Country" as soon as it came out and pretty much bought everything else over the next few days, totally regretting passing up MHTRTC when I did!
Also, hearing "Everything You Do Is A Balloon" after coming home drunk and finding Hi Scores in the post from Warp one evening was the defining moment for me. That was a real "Holy F*ck!" moment. That secured their place at the top of my "Bested Band Ever" tree.

over mid's 2005, when they released TCH although roygbiv was the first song I listened of them.

I bought MHtRtC around last year, purely on the quality of Turquoise Hexagon Sun. That was when I got into them.

the first boc song i heard was kid for today. i didn't know what to think about it at first. it was really good, but it took my head to a place i'd never been before. to be honest, the closeness of the sounds and the nostalgia that song produced was quite painful at that time in my life. but i knew it was something i had to search deeper into. i went out and bought the ep the next day.

Between The Campfire Headphase and Trans-Canada Highway..I heard it at a friends place a lot and soon enough I bought their stuff. Yaaaa

Technically I learned about them when Headphase came out, but the first song I ever heard from them was Bocuma. It was truly a magical song, but it felt so incomplete. Of course my impression was that they were pure ambient music, along the lines of Namlook and Brian Eno. But when I listened to MHTRTC I got something totally different, but I was certainly not disappointed.

Bocuma and roygbiv compliment each other perfectly. Probably the best combination of tracks by BoC so far.

Someone handed me a bunch of cd's to listen to.
Amongst them was autechre's Amber. and BOC's mhtrtc.
The autechre stuff got me first. BOC was ok but hadnt properly sunk in as yet.
I went for more autechre for a while. Incunabula Tri rep etc..

Then the same guy asked me to listen to iabpoitc..
Also asked if i liked mhtrtc.. i said it was ok but thats about it.

This was around 2001 i think but to be honest BOC took longer than most bands to sink in with me.
But eventually when they did.............

i cant vote here..and i think thats funnie...i heard them on a tape i got from a friend in anstruther in 1993..the songs were full band like material with acoustic stuff labeled boards of canada..he stated that it was old shit, check it out..anyway that tape ( and so many others) werent taken care of because i was a sloppie sophmore in high school..(and i didnt like the tape much at the time anyway) so its gone and i forgot about the band until music had the right came out..and i was like oh that band..well when i heard that album i was shocked to hear the difference in style...and even then it still took awhile for the music to sink in...now im finally over the fixation and back to normal fan level...

When Radiohead's 'Kid A' came out, in late 2000, there was a lot of talking in the press about the influence of Warp artists -mostly Ae and BoC- on their musical reinvention. That was the first time i heard about Boards, and i had the curiosity, but it wasn't till the release of Geogaddi that i was in the proper mood to listen.

My first college roomate had Music. I was indifferent about the stuff at the time. He always played it on the weekends after parties to mellow out. He used my banging stereo but I never really looked at what he was playing. Just enjoyed it, though it never sank in properly because we were rarely in a proper state of mind for the listen. And of course distracted by people coming or going from our apt. Also at the time I was more concerned with impressing the next wave of hot freshmen girls than the music anyways.

So about 4 years later during an average day at work some Twoism songs kept popping up on an internet radio station I used. I enjoyed the tracks I heard but being busy at work I never took note of who it was. For the next week or so sixtyniner and twoism kept reappearing and I was enjoying it. I was also disturbed at how familiar sounding the songs were but could not pinpoint from where.

Fast forward a couple weeks and I went on a cd shopping spree and brought a bunch of new stuff I had been enjoying on the station. Twoism was one of them. I was immediately fascinated with it so I looked at the BoC discography and purchased it in chronological order about one month apart for each album/ep. Then waited for Campfire to come out. I was excited that it was the stuff my old roomate was playing and I just never realized it.
