I am obsessed with this instrument. I want one so bad.
The hang drum is a melodic percussion instrument that you play with your hands. It consists of two metal hemispheres connected by a hollow rod that goes down the middle. One hemisphere is smooth, and the other has 7 or more divots on it's surface which are each tuned to a different note. Hitting the center of the drum plays a "base" notes. Every note can be varied depending on how you play it (shape and position of hand)
To date, they have been notoriously hard to acquire, having been manufactured only by the Swiss duo that invented them. Each was hand-made. You had to get on a 2 year waiting list, go to Switzerland to pick it up in person, and pay $1000-2000 for this specially shaped and tuned piece of metal.

Now, a company named Pantheon (makers of the common steel drum) are working on their own version of the hang drum, which they are calling the 'Halo'. No word on when it will be done, but the pricing will be somewhat cheaper than Panart's original versions (something like $500-700 less), and will be shipped to customers.

Never heard of this instrument before but I know that Plaid are the masters of the electronic hang drum
I always thought Plaid 'imitated' those metalic bowls (like a wok, don't know how they are called but I do have a picture of Hawai and beach in my head when I think of that instrument) but this totally is the same sound.

Pretty cool. I'm sure BoC already has one. They have so many instruments it's ridiculous.

After giving it a test run this sample pack is REALLY good! Could indeed mistake it for the real thing, its just not the same though hitting MIDI keys as opposed to playing the beast!

I don't think Plaid used this, in this plugin you also hear the hand slamming on the handdrum.

Ive also been obsessed with one of these and have had no reply from the three letters sent to the lads at Panart trying to get one, although when I first wrote to them I actually had some money if they do reply now im a bit buggered as Im totally skint!!

Manu Delago a fantastic Hang player is touring in the uk soon and I have spoken to him briefly about touring nearer my home instead of just London and it might well happen.
