Greek riots.

Anyone here know someone involved?

No, but a bunch of my friends got arrested at the RNC protests here in Minneapolis. It's pretty scary how much that scene resembled a riot.

Yeah...quite a few friends of mine were involved in the house raids in Minneapolis. One of them was the head of that "anarchist cult" that was actually just a public advocacy group.

As much as I dislike violence, looking at these photos is a positive reminder of the power people still hold over government (when they remember).

positive reminder my ass. sometimes people stand up and get pissed. sooooooometimes they get together and try to do something about it (usually after they are almost forced to, like when a loved one gets SHOT). dont worry though, this chaos will be controlled in an orderly fashion, and things will get back to normal.

if the anarchists had their way, this is precisely what would happen, and what we'd all like to see happen. just not through the use of police and gunfire. nobody likes chaos and bloodshed.

Change is often positive, even if the circumstances in which it arrises seem otherwise.

If things to "go back to normal" (not that the status quo approaches anything near to normalcy), it won't be permanent or even remotely durable.

The youth unemployment rate in Greece is something around 20%...until those young people find meaningful jobs within their community and have some assurance that their own children can expect the same, this will continue (both in Greece and wherever similar situations arrise).

Most of these kids are just like you and me, in an environment where they don't have many options beyond what's in these pictures. I'm sure there are a few kids just in it for the thrill, and plenty of looters coming in after the fact, but a majority of these people seem to just be desperate.

i certainly agree that they are desperate. i wasn't refering to the greek riots particularly, just the anti-establishment counter-culture that has been forming in my area recently, so i can respect the genuine emotional drive that has manifested itself in the people of athens at this time.

Thanks for clarifying man.

Personally, I think that the root of anti-establishment counter-culture is fueled by a need for a completely different way of life...one that's genuinely functional in the long-term, and evolutionarily stable. Until we acheive that way of life (as we had a long, long time ago), riots will always be in the news, in one form or another, for one cause or another.
