Good band. Awesome lyrics. Anyone else here like them?

Yes. Saw them back in 1990 supporting......um...... Megadeth. What? I was young.....

Saw Jerry Cantrell live about 6 years ago and he was fantastic. Played about 6 solo tunes and then gave in and just did 90 mins of AIC. The guy who went on to be their new singer supported him live that night too. Actually pretty good. Just not the same as Layne Stayley obviously....

My old band at Uni used to cover Would? It was possibly one of only two songs we played that we actually made sound ok. (the other being Outshined by Soundgarden)

Great band. Awesome riffs. Layne Staley's voice was possibly the most recognizable and frightening voice in rock music history.

not so much, i was more into Mudhoney and Sonic Youth

A perfect album. Flawless.

However, my prize possession is my 12" Vinyl copy of Badmotorfinger, signed by Chris Cornell, Kim Thayll, Matt Cameron and Ben Shephard.

I was 16, queued for hours outside our local indie record store to get it signed, take it home, and then hotfoot it back across the City to see em support Guns 'N' Roses (who were as awful as I thought they would be). Paid a fortune for the ticket to see 30 minutes of Soundgarden (ok, and an hour of Faith No More).

Might have told this story before, but the crowd was full of glammed-up make-up clad tossers who hated Soundgarden like I hate Moby. After half an hour of bottles, piss and abuse being hurled at em, Soundgarden ended with a crushing version of Jesus Christ Pose, Cornell somehow fixing his Les Paul to his mic-stand to make a crucifix as they ended in a MBV-esque wall of feedback and a huge "Fuck You!" to the crowd. Awesome.

Oh and Hungrymanweaselbeast - Mudhoney were incredible. Mark Arm is still the man.

Good band, but I never really connected to Alice in Chains the way I did with bands like Soundgarden, or even Pearl Jam. Layne Stayley's voice can be jaw dropping when the band clicks, but his lyrics, although they were honest and real, just didn't relate to me. So many of their songs were about depression, drugs, and suicidal tendencies, etc that I didn't really WANT to listen to them.
Dirt is a strong disc, but their self titled release was pretty underwritten.

Word dude. I understand what you mean. However, AIC did say in an interview that (like BoC) their approach to lyrics and meanings is very fan-friendly. Layne expressed a sentiment something akin to the Bros, when he said...something like... 'we've written whatever we're thinking about or experiencing at the time. The song is about whatever you're thinking about or experiencing at the time.' Maybe kind of cliche to put it that way, but the sentiment is there - it's open ended. i can relate to a lot of AIC lyrics, though i've never done heroin. Down In A Hole is a frickin all-time classic in my books. Anyone who's ever felt depression in any measure can feel that one, I think.

"Superunknown", along with "The Downward Spiral" and "I Care Because You Do", is one of the defining albums my childhood. not a bad song on that LP. i wish i had it on vinyl.

as for AIC, i love "Jar Of Flies". really mellow and beautiful EP. also, the song "Wake Up" by Mad Season has arguably one of Layne's best vocal performances ever. check it out if you haven't heard it.

Yeah I bought it on it's release day, way back when! Stunning album, but that opening track is possibly Layne Stayleys greatest ever performance.
