i've decided to leave this place as there is far too much talk of filesharing and linking to illegal downloads for my liking
i've worked in record stores, have friends at many labels and know so many people making music as their main income and have seen so many people suffer from filesharing that have based their livelihoods around music for decades ... i've seen it first hand and seen the figures from many people in the industry especially involved in digital music
i guess it doesn't mean much unless you know people who suffer from this
sorry, just can't stick it anymore
good luck

Whilst I agree that it is sad that so many people do obtain music illegally without consideration for the artists concerned, I'd be surprised if you found a like-minded group among whom file-sharing isn't prevalent. And I can't say I've noticed a great deal on this forum to indicate people commonly stealing music, though maybe I haven't looked hard enough.
I personally disagree with obtaining music for free, it should be up to the artist how much is paid for their music. And people who come up with the 'art should be free' argument should take a moment to try and realise it is a completely baseless argument used purely for it's convenience. I don't see how art can be considered different from a product or a service you would buy from the shops. Somebody has spent time and money producing it and deserves something in return. It is their livelihood.
I'm not sure what you hope to achieve by leaving. I dunno, seems a strange reason to leave the forum but it's your decision. All the best anyway.

Ok i'll say it one more time,i once Downloaded an album and it was called Geogaddi it was such a great download even .flac so was even better!! And guess what i bought everything i could find from this fine band, you only have to look in my Boc collection right here on this forum, also i have done this with many artists,as stated in my previous spat.Anyway i suppose i cannot speak for everyone and i don't agree with people making money from Downloading, but to be honest you will never get rid of sharing. Also you never did answer my question...have you ever borrowed a cd from someone? even without the artists permission?...nah didn't think so.....anyways Peace & Love

I have never recieved ANYTHING illegally from anyone on this board. I am not saying it is impossible in the least, I just feel the members of this board value music far too much to do those types of things.
I hate the idea of ILLEGAL file sharing. I also hate the fact that THIS board has that type of negative connotation attatched to it. So much that a member has to decided to jump ship. This board as always been such a pleasure to me. Even through the craziest moments.
I have very close friends in the biz, and I know the what illegal file sharing can do from top to bottom. Whether it is an up and coming band, an established band, or the owner of independent record store I have seen what the wave of file swapping has done over the last decade....I just never thought this board was some how attatched to that scene. Maybe since I do not participate in it, I do not realize it is there. I guess it is that tree that has fallen in the woods and I wasn't around...cuz i did't hear it....

Whilst I respect HMB's opinion, and whilst I'm genuinely sorry to see him leave (he was a fantastic member who contributed more than most IMO), I don't hold to the view that this messageboard is a particular hotspot of downloading.
In fact, there are other boards I've posted on where frankly it happens far more frequently. I'm neither condoning nor condemning illegal downloading, I just don't see it as especially prevalent on this board. Have I missed something?

Uhm..? I guess this is a standard message you post on various messageboards??
From day 1 we don't allow linking to copyrighted material. There have been a few members in the past who posted copyrighted material but the URLs were deleted in an instance. I haven't seen any URLs to copyprotected stuff in the past few months!
If this post was Twoism only then you only post this to make a statement I guess. The post is so out of place because Twoism gathers a lot of music fans from over the world who actually recommend each other stuff and thereby buy copyprotected music! Not even to mention the great independent music which floats around on Twoism.
Your post made me a bit angry because the Twoism team does everything it can to support artists, wether they are established or independent!!
Good luck to you too!

Finally, the voice I care most about on this board.
Spoken like a true veteran.

Thanks Anson
I wanted to lock the topic right away because it's total bollocks (or I've missed a few URLs). But I'm
very interested to hear what hungry_manweaselbeast has got to say and I'm very curious if this is what more members experience.

Very well said, AE.
There's such a timeless, transcendental, communist element to art. All this file-sharing business is just an integral part of our free society now. Art's intangibility makes it difficult to pinpoint whether someone's talent will ever triumph and truly be recognized and rewarded financially, but perhaps could become valuable as others will use it as inspiration, copy it, morph it into something new, etc etc... Moreover, the harder you work, the more chances of opening doors for yourself, by being prolific, perfecting your art, speaking to ppl, getting websites going, playing out more, playing for free even, etc etc.. As we don't rely on a media machine that'll mass-market, mass-produce the fruit of our labor, at least not yet, those are the venues to consider. Even established artists (although bank account heavy) still work hard to maintain their status (concerts, countless studio hours, 5 yrs in the making, etc etc).
Artists shouldn't blame their fans for file or CD sharing, they mostly do it out of love and admiration for that particular talent.
What Radiohead did a little while back by allowing their album to be downloaded for free was genius. As if to say: listen to it. Enjoy it. I you're happy with it then support us by buying it.. as we know you will. It's that good
My first purchase was MHTRTC in 2000 (I think). It mostly sat there collecting dust. It took almost a decade for me to truly understand their music. I'm guilty of downloading some of their stuff but I also believe that one day I'll buy the entire Boards of Canada discography just show it off to everyone because that's how much I love them.
I personally feel blessed to have discovered this forum

If anything, the random sound section has gotten me to buy more music than I could otherwise. I don't really keep track of any electronic music forums or releases other than this (and watmm for the lols) so looking at the music section in both forums exposes me to a lot of stuff. But I'll be honest, the CD as a medium to put music out with doesn't seem to be here to stay. So it feels like a poor choice when I buy them. And I've never really felt attached to art or pictures provided in the cover sleeves either. I look at them once, sometimes they can set the mood for an album, then I shelf em.
And the only real obvious talk about pirating around here (that I notice) is people talking about old tunes and bocmaxima stuff. Even that is indirect and I'm sure basically every member here would pay for said tracks if they were released conventionally.

Totally agree, I was angry at seeing this post.
I might not post all that much on here any more, but mostly that is just to me beign incerdibly busy and concentrating on being a mother and a teacher and a musician and artist. I would love to get involved with all manner of fascinating topics on this forum and find it the best on the whole internet. Mostly the people her talk sense, and have a great sense of humour and respect for each other. And at no time have I found this a place of illegal music, instead a great sounding board for music that might not have been heard by other memebers, and with this board, was probably bought by many of us.
I am not saying I have never illegally downloaded anything, but to be honest when I buy clothes or shoes I try them on first, when I pick up a book, I read the back first before making the decision to buy. With music, I hear suggestions, listen to a few tracks before deciding to purchase. I love buying music and owning both vinyl and CD's. I don't get the pleasure from MP's or whatever the format, whether purchased or downloaded from illegal sources.
HMB, we may not have chatted much, but I do read this board at least 3 or 4 times a week. And I really do find a lot of interesting topics. You shouldn't post a topic in this manner, it is against what this whole place as a community is for.
What a shame in my opinion.
Thanks for not freezing topic though Robin, would be a shame not to have had my say.
Look forward to reading HMB's reply.
