Flying Lotus Appreciation Thread

A thread to discuss the genius works of Steven Ellison aka Flying Lotus.

Listening to Los Angeles again, and damn, it sounds so fresh! I know Boards don't really go much on laptop musicians, but they must like FlyLo! He incorporates organic sounds into his works, creating a more messier atmosphere (ok, i just got that off Wikipedia) but it's true!

Can't wait to hear more from him in the future, love his style as well (flatcaps rule!)

Whoa... I hadn't seen that before... Quite enjoyed! The rainbow ejaculate at the end made it!

I saw him supporting RZA a while ago - his set was fantastic and he seemed to be really enjoying himself too.

I saw Flying Lotus at Subclub a few months back, really good. Rustie also played, that was pretty freekkin mad.

Los Angeles is really good, reminds me of DJ Shadow taking a trip down a different path.

I purchased LA the other day, it's a nice listen. Nothing revolutionary, but some nice ideas and textures. There seems to be a new movement in electronic music where beats and melodies are off-tempo on purpose, and the sounds are very compressed so everything pumps and breathes with the kick.

well it may not be 'revolutionary', but it destroys 98% of so-called 'electronica/idm/hiphop/wonk' out there. he's got his own sound that's distinctively 'lotus'. that alone arguably makes his sound 'revolutionary' in this age of everyone and their mother rocking ableton and making attempts to sound flavour du jour.

Haven't heard anything outside of what he's done with Erykah Badu. This is mostly because I obsess over Badu.

Been vowing to give him a go for some time now. Love reading up on him and such.

Oh Erykah! New Amerykah Parts One and Two... Ay may zing.
If you've not checked out any Flylo properly though, shame on you! ;) I recommend you do, and start at his 1984 album then all albums and eps after that. He's one very talented chappy.

This dude is overrated IMO.

And if you work with Odd Future I hate you even more.

Gimmicky rappers, talk about rape and shit like its a joke. Played out.

That's like hating Brian Eno because he's worked with Coldplay. ;)

Agreed. They tend to go for the shock value in some of their lyrics and it comes across as pretty crass and immature. OF are overrated IMO.

I love Flylo though. 4 excellent albums in a row, some ace EP's in between, and he's amazing live too.

Speaking of which, I filmed this when I saw him live.

Not the best quality and shaky as fuck (I was hyped and drunk), but this was the encore at the end of his set.
