bizarre, i've been running it since the beginning of the year.

Ive always used ESET nod32 and the windows firewall simple.

Thanks guys - really really helpful. Giving Avast a try. I'd heard good things about it before so I'll see how I get on with it. Comodo looks handy though... Decisions decisions.

both avg and avast is free (even after x days). i switched to avast from avg because there were no ways to disable it or ignore threat when running clean keygens etc (which antivirus programs sometimes tries to stop).

both are really lightweight on the cpu, and so is nod32.

dont use antivirus
use windows firewall
enable automatic downloading of updates
and install anything that says critical
and you'll be sorted.
its free, your computer will be quicker for it, and you wnt have fallen into the trap of believing hype.

Don't use IE, but even firefox has got holes. There will be always a change you will be infected because you will have to wait to get the latest updates. Before a fix is out, your computer can get infected.

Well to be honest it all depends what sites he visits,if hes only using it for the sites hes knows well there shouldnt be a problem,there was a report on this not so long ago saying you didn't even need anti virus,i'll have to track it down.Also hes using windows firewall which isn't a problem because ive used it for years why people buy a separate firewall is beyond me.Oh and use firefox its the daddy!!!!!!!!

Well, the reason why is because websites can be hacked and with that hackers infect those websites with mallware. Here in the Netherlands websites by the government are hacked so once in a while, websites you should be able to trust for not having malware...

A separate firewall, instead of the Windows XP firewall, should be used imo. The XP firewall only checks outgoing connections and not incoming. Incoming connections are just the kind of connections you do want to control.

Just test your ports i always come up stealthed -Means that your computer is invisible to others on the Internet and protected by a firewall or other similiar software.
