Did a search, but didn't find any dedicated thread. Surely someone here has discovered Nick Drake besides me. It was raining all day here and I happened to stumble across his music. I can't stop. I can't recommend his 'Pink Moon' album enough. Anybody else a fan of this melancholy acoustic wonderful-ness? My favorite song of his so far...... This guy is apparently also featured on the 'Garden State' soundtrack for those of you in the know...

Absolutely love him, he lead such a sad and short life but wrote some fantastic music which has thankfully been recognised, albeit 40 years too late. Five Leaves Left is lovely, then again so is anything he's ever done.

huge fan of nick drake. favourite song has to be his cover of jackson c. frank's "milk and honey". its so tender...ahhh

I can see why Drake has a big underground fanbase but if I'd have to pinpoint why he's not a favourite of me I would say his music is too balanced or something, probably a property which appeals to many fans. I love seventies folk music but I prefer stuff like Fairport Convention, Devendra Banhart, Vashti Bunyan, etc.

Brilliant artist. Never got in to Bryter Later; I found his delicate voice and intricate guitar work were smothered by all the additional instrumentation. But Pink Moon and Five Leaves Left are stunning albums. He was also a brilliant lyricist, though the lyrics in Pink Moon make for pretty depressing reading. It's clear he'd had enough by that point.

I didn't hear a lot of his stuff, but what I heard so far is absolutely stunning. I love his princess of the sand. So beautiful!

Been in love with his stuff for years. Hauntingly beautiful.

He and Leo Kottke make up my "palate cleansing" music...when I don't want to listen to anything else, or just feel sick of picking apart tracks to figure out how they did it, I just pop in Bryter Layter or Pink Moon.

Bit of trivia: Drake was never filmed in his adult life. Only photographs of him exist...of which this is my favorite (still can't figure out if those are Fly Agaric mushies or something else):

I think "River Man" is one of the most lush, beautiful pop songs ever written.

pink moon is fantastic

I especially like Northern Sky, partly because it's about the only song of his I can even begin to approach playing on the guitar. He's a bit like Joni Mitchell for me - he gets remembered for his lyrics and for his infamous life, but for me the most amazing thing about both of them is how well they play guitar. Nick and Joni are just on another planet when it comes to invention and performance on an acoustic guitar.

I bought a book with notation of Nick Drake's songs - I can barely even make the chords, let alone manage the right hand rhythms...

Anyone happen to catch the 2 Nick Drake shows on BBC 4 last night? One was the documentary 'A Skin Too Few' which is good to learn some stuff about the man, but there was also a recording of covers performed by various artists at The Barbican in January 2010 - I would highly recommend this as worth a watch. Not all the covers were very good, but a handful were very good imo; especially this one (but the quality here isn't amazing. Check out BBC iPlayer those who can incase the show is still there ;]

I watched a documentary on BBC4 about Nick Drake on Friday - he became withdrawn and depressed, and exclaimed dismay at the fact that people kept telling him how famous and great he was, yet he couldn't afford to buy a pint of milk and was living at home with his parents in adulthood.
This sounds like an all to familiar tale in the world of music if you ask me. Very, very sad. He left some great music behind, but didn't have a pleasant life towards the end, mainly because of poverty.
