hello
I'm very into sonic youth at the moment and I just wondered, being the lovely musically eclectic bunch we are at twoism, I'd love to know if anybody could reccomend me some more groups/musicians (past or present) who make interesting and uncoventional sounds with guitars?

): Jonsi of Sigur Ros uses a cello bow on his guitar. Don't know if it's special, but I didn't hear it before....

I'm a big SY fan but their mid 80's period is definitely my favourite, with EVOL, Sister, Bad Moon Rising, some of their most astonishing guitar work and experimentation definitely resides on those albums. When they had the majority of their heavily modified irreplaceable gear stolen, apart from being tragic, it was the end of an era in some ways as those songs couldn't really be replicated again properly due to the unique tunings and customisations etc.

In terms of guitar innovators, lots of great 90's bands are still waiting to be rediscovered who were hastily and unfairly tagged together with the SY or grunge tag but who really did some great things with guitars. One of my favourite bands are Polvo who really created their own style with utterly bizarre tunings and techniques. They are amazing. I'd recommend their Today's Active Lifestyles and Cor Crane Secret Albums. Unwound are an other very interesting guitar band from that period along side the insane Trumans water who's "Spasm Smash XXX oxoxox and ass" sounds like little else out there. Superconductor were a great band with 7 guitarists, 2 bass players and drummer.

Seefeel don't get enough credit really for how they used guitars. Quique is quite incredible and sounds fresh to this day when you realise it's mostly guitars

Main do some brilliant ambient drone and experimental guitar pieces.

well, first off all, I really don't like Rage Against the Machine (or any heavy metal) but their gitarist Tom Morello can get the most crazy ass sound out of his guitar.

Not all (if not most) solo's are inventive, but some off them are golden.
