Everyone knows about the big, general ones, (the Daleks etc) but everyone's got something at the back of their minds that they saw on TV once as a kid, were terrified by, and then never saw again. Unchecked, these things sit at the back of your mind waiting for something innocuous to remind you of them, and give you a shiver or a feeling of unease you can't quite put your finger on.

Well, the internet means nothing is truly lost, and the only way out is through. Face your fears! Share what used to terrify you so that it may be mocked and forever robbed of its power. I'll start.

This was an ad that Butlins ran in the mid 80s that used to terrify me. Something about the desolation, and the happy music, probably. Still, explosions!

the opening to the u.s. show 'ironside'...with the psycho synth and him getting shot and the screen turning blood red...it used to freak me out!!!

some episodes of 'in search of' freaked me out as well. the bigfoot episode in particular. very unsettling.

Fishing lures with multiple 3-pronged hooks on them. I stumbled into a tacklebox as a toddler. Scarred me for life.

Retarded large dogs that aren't trained well so they run up to you and knock you down and shit because they're too excited. As a kid this is horrible. At least as a grown up I can just blame the dog owners for not knowing how to train a dog.

BEEESSS! I used to run like a quarter mile through the neighborhood like I was trying to evade cops every time I saw one near me.

For some reason when I was like 6 to 10 and I was sleeping and woke up because I had to pee, it was really hard for me to go to the bathroom, I would stay in bed for like 15 minutes hoping I would fall asleep again, but that was never the case. So after 15 to 20 minutes I would go to the toilet, and whenever I flushed it I actually ran to bed. I was always afraid that some hand would come out the toilet whenever I flushed so I ran as fast as I could.

The Blair Witch Project, when I was like 10 or something my older sister watched it with me, I freaked the fuck out. When I was 16 or something, I watched it again and pretty much laughed myself to death.

I was a pretty rational child generally speaking
the possiblity of genetically engineered viruses wiping us out, meteorites hitting the earth and the yellowstone caldera erupting scared me shitless - (I watched far too much doom-mongering horizon type documentaries as a child)
also less rationally, I was paranoid that my parents would abandon me in the night, leaving me alone (I'm sure the psychologists would have a field day with that one...)

Catfish have always been very scary, but to be on topic:
Two B Films really got me - Rawhead Rex and Carnasaurs.
Any cheaply budgeted horror film pretty much scared the hell out of me.
Also yes peewee was pretty bad, too.

according to my mom I was terrified of a show called Button Moon when we lived in hong-kong.

I don't even remember the show.

The beginning of Harry and the Hendersons, when they hit Harry with the car. Scared the crap outta me when I was just a wee lad.

i used to be terrified of burglars...i was convinced i could hear them walking up the stairs in the middle of the night...i used to shine the light on my watch to scare them away.

When I was about seven, I disturbed a guy trying to break into our house. Went downstairs in the middle of the night to get a glass of water and heard a noise. Went to look out our patio door and saw a bloke trying to jimmy it open. I think the bloke nearly had a heart attack and he ran off at Olympic speed. Wasn't scary at the time, I didn't realise what had happened to be honest, but it was the morning after when the Police came around our house and I had to tell them what I'd seen. This guy had tried to break into another 3 or 4 houses on our street but gotten nowhere. Guess he wasn't a great burglar??

But the thing that really, really freaked me out when I was very little, was a stuffed elephant my Dad brought me back from Africa. I swear it had eyes that just burned into you whatever angle you looked at it. In the end my Mam had to get rid of it! What? It was scary man....

What Numerator said, I could not sleep when I was about 8 because of the hole in the ozon layer.

Also, when I was about 9 or 10 I watched the movie Amsterdamned at a friends house. Thinking about that movie still gives me the chills, especially the scene in which the murderer commits suicide with a harpoon through his head. Will laugh when I see this movie now probably, but not the least tempted to see it again.

Yes! My mom bought my sister and I the VHS tape of Amsterdamned when we were kids, she didn't look carefully and thought it would be good to keep us children entertained for an afternoon, but she was wrong.. We were both terrified, very scary indeed.

Cupz I totally forgot about that movie, Watership Down. That movie def. scared the hell out of me, Fiver's visions of blood and those creepy ass rabbits.... Especially the warrens, the warrens were really freaky. The book wasn't too bad. But the cartoon movie was very scary.

Btw, I'm still equally afraid aliens and ghosts since I saw Roswell footage and read stories about ghosts as a kid. You will never find me alone in a deserted area at night (like deserted roads or near forests, eek).

I remember watching daytime tv with my sister during the school summer holidays when i was 7-8 years old, and we were watching This Morning. They had a feature on when the world was going to end. Well i cried my eyes out, because i didn't want it to end.
