I feel like most of you reading this title will immediately think the worst, and I understand completely. I am a smaller independent artist who just happens to love BOC and I feel that certain songs by BOC really capture certain moods. So when I heard the track "Constants are Changing", I thought it really captured the feeling or emotion of what love is, in music. It was such a short track, that I really was wishing it would go on for few more minutes. I then had the idea to stretch it out into something more, and got some other people involved and made a short ambient/trip hop track out of it. I know messing with anything BOC related is most likely looked down on by fans, as the songs by themselves are works of art (to me). I'm posting this here to see if any of you can dig it, and just to get some general feedback. Thanks in advance!

I like it! Nice use of BoC + you have a good voice.

BUT

Your mix is bad. Way muddled in the...400hz to 1khz range? I think, I can't be 100% on that, but all the kicks and bass and samples are all garbled up in that range. Though it could be youtube - it fucks up sound.

Not into it. sorry. The beginning wasn't that bad until you started rapping, it sounded too forced and almost like you were reading it from a piece of paper, it sounds almost comical.

I say this respectfully in a critiqued way.

For me, it's the bad mixing that does it for me. It's too centered and the high/midrange is too pronounced. But like ninetyoneplus said, this could be youtube. I doubt it though.

I think that just about every song can be beat matched with some hip-hop, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they will sound good together. Just the other night I was able to beat match almost every song on Geogaddi/MHTRTC with relative ease.

BOC utilizes many common bassline patterns found in genres such as hip hop and jazz. But they have gone beyond those aspects associated with those two genres, to blend a smoothie of turquoisey nostalgic-meloncholic hexagonal conglomoberry(heh made that up ).

Anyways, IMO some of BOC can sound quite good with hip hop, and a lot of it doesn't. Just because it wasn't meant to be layered or complimented. It was meant to be left alone and enjoyed for what it is.

Though I love to dabble in genre mixing and boc is such a fun element to use. I.E. -

I'll try to post it on a better website, I actually had to force the stereo on the song by adding "&fmt=18" on the end of the link, because otherwise it would sound really really bad. That's youtube for ya! But even then, the quality is no where near the original unfortunately. I will say I feel like there is a little too much bass on my vocals, while the rappers might have been a bit thin.

I'm guessing you're new to the whole rap thing? I don't actually rap on this song (Ft. means Featuring, I had someone else rap), and if I did try to rap, it would sound a whole lot worse haha. My style is a lot more like kid cudi, while I would compare the rapper (KG) to someone like asher roth, which is either you love or you hate kinda thing.

Could be youtube? Hmm...just maybe . My mix may not be perfect, but it's not even close to what the original mp3 sounds like, much cleaner in my opinion.
And when you say "same", do you mean the rapping? I've had a few people say it sounds alittle "cheesy", but I feel like it fits pretty well. Either way, thanks for the feedback!

I would assume your talking about the rapper on this song, KG. And yes, I think he does haha. I'm more of a Cudi fan myself.

But who's to say what is and what isn't? It's all opinion based and entirely up to us, the music makers.

I like it man, very dark and moody. A lot of my other stuff is similar to this, although i tend to be a alittle spacey-er haha.

PS: What I don't like is that this track will be up on cd-baby soon for sale? According to the youtube info. I don't think it's right to make money of this track as it's totally based on the boards of canada track. The copyright hound will devour you entirely.

Thanks man! I appreciate it. I'm waiting on warp records licensing to email me back, hence the "soon" for sale haha. I emailed them once just asking if I could use it and they didn't seem happy about it, so I sent them the song in question and I'm just waiting on there response. I doubt I'll get there approval, and if that's the case, I'll host it somewhere for free. I've often thought about this as well, I'm not at all a big listener or fan of hiphop/rap, but I have friends who have often wanted to freestyle over some BoC tunes I've showed them..perhaps one of these days I'll get them to do it up and record it--just for shits and giggles hahah

No, I am not new to the whole rap thing. I enjoy hip hop more than rap. I am 25 years old, definitely not new to it, haha. I enjoy classic hip hop though, this new era of hip hop sucks in my opinion, same old fucking sound, not to mention the over played auto tuned shit. I just think that "KG" guy sounds cheeseballish.

Oh I gotcha man, I thought maybe you were because the "ft." thing. But yeah I agree with you, the majority of the rap coming out now is garbage. I only follow a few artists like lupe and kudi, (who's new album is kind of a letdown ) mostly rappers who are more like "artists" than rappers. I can appreciate the creativity part in it. As for the rapper in the song, yeah some people were saying that too, I feel like it fits personally but I can see where you're coming from. Oh and I'm 20 by the way.

This feels like a relevant thread. Peter Serafinowicz (Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Look Around You etc) has just linked to a little something he glued together between BoC and Snoop Dogg back in 2003.
