Hello folks,
I hope some of you might be able to answer a question;
In a recent discussion it was mentioned that there used to be a Boards of Canada - related forum on the web circa 1996-1999, which wasn't the EHX site or the Yahoo group. This may have been an Allmusic (or hotmail/msn?) type of site, where users discussed the music, but also there may have been a file repository where users uploaded related pictures and files etc.

If anybody has any recollection of this site, I'd be very grateful to hear from you on this thread, thanks.

I'm not really sure what you'd be referring to, but I can try to find it. The idm mailing list archives would be a good place to check.

A slim chance, but I do recall there was some oldish forum where discussion about the original old tunes leak first took place. I can't remember at all where it was, though, and it's been long gone.

Yeah, I tried the old egroups.com url through WayBack too, but doesn't seem to hold much info anymore. egroups was the precursor to Yahoo groups that Yahoo bought out around 2000 or 2001 I think?

Possibly you be referring to xltronic, but I don't think it's that old. At least, the current archives only go back to 2001. And it's not particularly boc-focused, either.

Also, what's the recent discussion to which you are referring that sparked this?

The earliest forum I can remember finding around the time of In A Beautiful Place out In The Country (2000) was the really old Warp messageboards. They used to get pretty fraught and antagonistic if I remember correctly and were eventually closed down. Don't remember any file repositories there though.

MDG, I know we are nosey and all, but why the sudden interest in this old message-board?

Do the bros want to dig up some old stuff for sampling or something, because you know, if they're looking for cool samples... I got plenty of stuff they are welcome to, lol.

From what I gather, it might have been a previous incarnation of something like an ArtistDirect page or MSN group, either way it will have been long gone for years. The description is, a sort of horizontally tabbed page with various content on the tabs, including official BOC artwork, fan art and uploads and misc links. I'm purely looking into this out of curiosity because it did ring a bell, and most of those sorts of pages have since become very sterile ad hoardings with zero user content.

I should note, there is a page on the wiki listing different BoC-related forums with archive links, feel free to update it on any that are not listed (defunct or otherwise).

Id be interested to actually see how much information about Boards of Canada was actually being discussed in 96-99, couldn't have been much.

The "make your own group" feature came along in summer of 1999, when MSN did away with the real newsgroups IRC chat rooms. Message boards, chat rooms, one customizable home page and photo albums were added. Gradually, the list pages, custom pages and documents pages were added. Some groups had icons displayed next to the name.
