Whenever you say to other people that you listen to Boards Of Canada (if you do say that), what kind of responses do you get?

For me, usually it's a blank stare, but I've also gotten:

"Oh, I think I heard a song by them. Like something...Cowboy, Davey Cowboy?"

And once: "Oh, if you like them, you'll LOVE Portishead." Which made me roll my eyes inside my mind.

"they're from canada? like Neil Young?"

or worse
"like Celine Dion?"

"Mhh.. never heard of em'"

my dad is into modest mouse, radiohead, pink floyd, kings of leon, arcade fire, coldplay.
he also loves classical music.

i tried to get him into BOC. he thought they were shite.
ive tried again since but he still thinks they are shite.

Kinda same experiences with my parents too. They sure do like they King Crimson..but BoC did not really impress em'. "Aight" was the word they used..

About two years ago I was talking about music with my friend and mentioned I loved BoC. He hadn't ever listened to them, but the next day he said he had bought Trans-Canada Highway on CD and quite liked it.

I don't think I've ever gotten any sort of response from anyone else.

I have noticed that most people to who I recommend something don't really get in to it or wont even bother. I think that many of em' like to discover music on their own and sometimes can even feel offended if someone is trying to introduce new music to them. Just my observations.

No one seems to have heard of them in my town

"Boards of Canada?" (they repeat the name in the form of a question and that is their response)

I have a few bros that like BoC in my small town though, and a couple people in my college class I've introduced it to/they have enjoyed. And one of my teachers.

my dad heard spectrum and told me to make music like that but he heard the beach at redpoint and he said he didn't like it, but i think he's a little sensitive inside but he works his ass off. i was also surprised that i seen dayvan cowboy on charter cable

Whenever I wear my BoC shirts I have had some people ask if they were a Snow Board Manufacture. Only had 2 random people compliment them, one guy at our local record shop and the other was a 16 year old kid working a Wendy's drivethru.

BoC has nothing to do with Portishead...

I love Portishead...I love trip-hop...

My responses are 95% of the time "What?"

the other 5% is the VERY few people that have heard of a song or two. (Dayvan Cowboy or Roygbiv)

But I've met nobody who is a fanatic like me...

Although I have gotten my friend into them :3

Here in brazil things are even worse.

A friend of mine suggest me to listen to Geogaddi like one year ago and he stills the only one that I can talk about Boards of Canada and Hexagon Sun stuff.

People usually don't like it at first sight or listen to one song or two then get addicted to them (usually I show them Dayvan Cowboy and Music is Math). No one make get curious and research stuff or anything.

People don't think you're as crazy if you include them and other obscure names in a list including some better-known artists you also listen to. Plus, that way you're more likely to get into a conversation about at least some of the music you care about.
