Boards of Canada recognising AFOT as canon?

As those of you who frequent boardsofcanada will know, BoC have set up their own youtube channel.

You'll notice it defaults to a playlist they've set up which shows unofficial videos for their songs. Take a look at the first one on the list:

Are BoC finally acknowledging the AFOT recordings as BoC canon?

I think they've talked and recognized Old Tunes in interviews. There was one where they said the reason that it hasn't ever been officially released is because they just didn't think it was that good, which I understand. Don't get me wrong, I love plenty of Old Tunes tracks, and "Sequoia" is one of my all time favorite tracks, but production wise it does seem a little lazy compared to their officially released discography.

I think they did rerelease a cleaned up Sequoia, though.

Never heard of those interviews, I always they never acknowledged them publically yet. Got any links to that?

All the interviews are on BoC pages, though I cant remember which one specificaly.

While they admit that they did make AFOT they dont regard it as cannon.
They stated in the interview that they had never intended for that to be heard publicly and they would not have wanted it heard in its current state. It was only ment to be heard by some friends. It was also made before they officialy released anything, so prior to their first release, nothing is cannon.

Also they dont manage any of their web activities themselves, its all warp staff who do. Someone at warp has probably linked that video, so I dont think this represents any decisions by BoC.

^Look at the favorites on the Atalanta Fugiens account that uploaded the ATP Julie And Candy in high quality. There's a ton of favorites that's a bunch of weird shit I've never heard of. One more reason I'm inclined to believe that's actually an account made by BoC and not someone from Warp or Hexagon Sun.

I remember someone either here or on watmm saying it was for a magazine or something. But it sounds a lot more clean and high quality than the rest of Old Tunes.

That's the cleaned up sounding one. Somewhere I have the original Old Tunes one, and it's slightly a little more distorted and it's about 30 or 40 cents lower in pitch. And the sound isn't as crisp. You might be able to hear it if you download certain Old Tunes uploads. Sequoia is one of BoC's best tracks, ever, imo.

well, they're really only accepting 5.9.78 as canon

but, hey, it's a start

I think if 5.9.78 is to be accepted as a cannon, it would have been when it was used in the Nissan commercial.

You could say they recognize P.C. too because it was used in the Invocation video

I seem to recall reading on bocpages somewhere that some release group ran the AFOTv1 tape through audacity, got rid of the tape noise and touted it as a "High-quality CD release" on the P2P networks. It was outed fairly quickly. This might be one of those.

At this point I really think it would be in their best interest to acknowledge their old material if only to finally lay to rest all the rumors and hearsay regarding what is and isn't a Boards of Canada song. I have lost count of how many times I have encountered people who swear up and down they have this or that album only to get shut down when they realize they have been duped. Plus it does a disservice to other artists who have their hard work mislabeled as Boards of Canada material. I imagine if I ever did meet Boards of Canada sometime after the shock wore off I would ask them to do just that. Besides they probably wouldn't like it that much if they asked me what my favorites songs were and I listed half a dozen songs they don't even acknowledge as their work or maybe even aren't their work at all.

I dont really like "High Quality," especially when it comes to AFOT. The tape buzz just adds to the authenticity and beauty of their work! I have actually put all of their released onto tape, and listening to them that way just makes it sound, to me, even more remarkable, different, nostalgic, unique, and beautiful.

But I'm just going to go ahead and say HOW CAN YOU DENY THAT AFOT IS BOC? Seriously? They use P.C. in Invocation, The Smallest Weird Number is in the Random 35 Tracker, Orange Hexagon Sun...

And not to mention all of the artwork. Hi Scores shares art work with AFOT.

If someone denies that AFOT is BoC, then they are ignorant.

Whatever.

End rant.

No one is denying it's BoC, but the official website doesn't list it in the discography which makes it not canon. It isn't officially recognized as BoC.

I rather hope they re-release the something good, the actual early albums and not the B-Sides.
