Just reading through some reviews of Boards Of Canada on the Rateyourmusic website when I came across this review for the In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country E.P


"BoC are one of the most curious acts of the late 90s, as they have maintained a fan favorite outside the electronic community but remain one of the most hated acts within the community. They use the same pallet album after album, keep the same simple chugging beat behind a song for 7 minutes, and rarely go outside their or the listener's comfort zone. It's IDM for coffee shops at it's finest.The backlash and hype that the band suffer from is not necessarily their fault, as they never wanted to be playing clubs outside Europe."


I have no issue with people not liking the music of BOC as its never going to be for everyone but I didn't know they were 'hated in the electronic community'. I'm a huge fan of electronic music and I haven't heard much hate going around for BOC. Also, did I miss the backlash?

This is genuinely not an excuse to post a review that will get people's backs up, I am just confused to whether BOC are 'hated' by electronic fans or whether this is just an uninformed opinion?

It's just a baseless statement. He's confusing his own opinion with fact.

BoC's music is far more complex and intricate than most of the tripe that passes off as idm

With idm, I see it as either the music is really good like Ae, BoC, AFX, and Squarepusher, or really shit like... I don't even know. But yes.

Anyway, I think his opinion is just ignorant and he maybe listened to ONLY that ep and is one of those guys who likes upbeat happy pop songs

I've never heard anyone say anything bad about Boards of Canada. Critics love them, Electronic fans adore the shit out of them, it's just a bias statement that makes no sense.

This isn't entirely without merit. I suppose hipsters or image board trolls think Boards of Canada is entry level music. I could totally see somebody being a tool to me because I like Boards of Canada and not his hip little band I've probably never heard of.

Interesting stuff. In my experience, people's responses to BOC have either been "They are brilliant" or "Who?". Mostly the latter to be honest

Actually Boards Of Canada indeed are based on my experience hated somewhat by the "electronic music comminuty". It as a lot to do with the fact that a lot elitistic people consider their music too simple and accessible, and indeed their music attracts a lot of first time electronic music listeners.

Personally I don't put much weight behind this though.

I have no idea where this sort of thought comes from. If anything BoC is not that accessible to "first time electronic listeners". Friends of mine who are like that can barely sit through Geogaddi when I play it for them.

I know. Same with my friends. They don't get it. That's what they say too... "I don't get it, it's repetitive and weird." And when I hear them say that, I become dumbfounded. How can you not hear and see the beauty in these albums? Fuck em. I let them go back to their Indie Scene bullshit. With an attitude like that, they don't deserve to hear such amazing music.
