Saw Tycho live

..and I'm convinced he's a little overrated. The visuals were all right, and it was nice to see a couple other members playing live with him in his band. However, I think he's more talented at graphic art (his ISO50 stuff) than he is at producing music. His music surely isn't horrible, but it's just not horribly compelling.

The opener, DVS, gave an absolutely fantastic performance though, blending a whole slew of artistic influences and styles into a powerful, dynamic experience. Highly recommend his stuff (especially Coming Up for Air volumes 1 and 2):

My problem with Tycho, or at least Dive, is that for all the gorgeous vintage synths he owns, he can seemingly only get one sound out of each. There's just not enough variation on sound and texture (lovely though it is) and I get bored after about 3 songs.

Will check out DVS though.

I had sort of a similar experience with Ulrich Schnauss live - though it wasn't so much an issue with synths as it was that I was realizing that I didn't really need breakbeats anymore.

The Stars of the Lid show a few weeks before probably ruined it for me.

.
MY EXACT PROBLEM! It's almost annoying, well, that word's a bit to harsh, but you know... I still like his music though. Also I have some pretty good jealousy going with his synth collection. Doesn't he have an Oberheim Four Voice? Those things aren't even made any more! And I'm assuming he only uses it for a single sound or something...

He just sounds so bland and uninteresting to me. I like a few tracks, but everything else just seems sort of.. obnoxious? Maybe that's the wrong word, but I agree 100% that he is overrated.

yeah...me too. I wanted to like Tycho when I heard him being compared to Boards, but it just isn't that compelling.

I feel kind of bad agreeing with everyone, but his sound does get pretty repetitive. I found Lone similar in this light actually (and many artists for that matter). Really liked both artists when I found them, started to wear off as I soared through their discography.

Agreed that Ulrich show was pretty lack luster.

Tycho doesn't do a whole for me to begin with.

Some of the stuff is lovely but, a bit of a hack.

Ditto for me too. Scott is a much better graphic artist and that is his primary job. I like what he does, I like the feel of it. More I really appreciate the music his web site has introduced me too.

I agree Ulrich is in the same category of staying too samey. With the exception that Scott's album is far better produced than Ulrich's. His second album was too compressed and there was distortion where there shouldn't have been any. After listening to Bibio's first three albums he almost ended up in the same place. And then Ambivalence Ave came out. And wow he blows me away. In many ways he has surpassed Boards of Canada for me.

Nope, I don't agree at all.
I agree not all of his tracks hit the spot, but that goes for every band imo. Yes, even for BoC.
Tycho's stuff is lovely, and really intelligent (Adrift/ Hours are some of my favorites at the moment).

I think this goes for Ulrich Schnauss as well.
I think this is music best to listen to at home, with headphones in stead of seeing them live. That would almost everytime end up in a dissapointment (seeing the guy banging some synths, nodding his head). Headphones music. Yes, that's it I think.
And don't blame an artist for having a trademark. I think that's a good thing. Way to many artist are desperatly trying other genres to make us believe that they are inventive. Most of the time it's a big mistake and something to make us shake our head, feeling sad for the guy.
I like trademarks. That's what makes artists mature.

couldn't agree more, Earthbound. Tycho has a trademark, absolutely, which is not a bad thing at. all. I do not agree that his music is repetitive. I get surprised by little details every time again. Now who can do that? Not many!! =] At the end of the day i guess it's a matter of taste really. Though brilliancy isn't... Right? And i think this guy is brilliant. How? By making music that can deeply move an old cynical heart like mine =']
All though his music is undoubtly most perfect heard from headphones while watching the warm-coloured scenery rapidly pass by you on the train in a late afternoon sun, as you are lazily and contently leaning your head back against the seat, i would KILL to see him live. Now, it's in our power to make him play live in London next week, and oh well i'm going to post a separate topic for this hehe =] READ THE TOPIC =]

I'm a fan of when you are making great sounding music that many love, STICK to that equation. It's great to add in different angles to the equation but to change the base of it just makes me upset. For instance, when Lone went from complete hip-hop / electronica to Retro House music (or whatever the hell you want to call it). I hate all his new shit.

That's just my opinion though; I love evolution but stick to what makes me love you, bitches.

Yup, took the words from my fingers :P

Sometimes it just hits the spot, and then you realize it for what it's worth.
I'd rank him up there with kashmir boots in terms of lucidity. Powerful stuff.

LOL I agree. I couldn't understand why people would refer to him when people were looking for stuff like BoC. His music is well produced, and I wont say he's bad. It's just generic. I don't get any feeling from it. I dont feel happy or sad or nostalgic or anything.

You put it best as him being not very compelling.

Would you care to elaborate on your Stars of the Lid live experience? It's such a bummer when artists I love on record disappoint me in the live setting.
