Folks, got no idea whether this has been made before and after running 3 searches trying to find I just decided to create new one.

I'll keep it short: awesome band, you should definitely check them out if you haven't yet. At the same time Richard James was breaking out with his crazy ambient techno, these guys were actually putting together some insane shit and keeping it hidden under the eyes of the press. They eventually released that stuff into these:

Now, to be completely honest, when I hear the genre "ambient techno", these are who I think of. Truly brilliant stuff:

I am fan for quite a while now. FSOL actually got me into electronic music.
Lifeforms is imo one of the best psychedelic/electronic albums ever made.

ISDN is my personal favorite of theirs. I lost track a little after Isness. But they are still one of my favorite acts of the past ~20 years.

I never could get into these guys. I tried. It just never jumped out at me. Come to think of it, a lot of electronic music doesn't. But then again, it's the same with other genres...

Dead Cities is an electronic masterpiece, Tales Of Ephidrina and Lifeforms are great albums too of course as are Accelerator and ISDN as well to an extent. But yeah Dead Cities is where it's at, I could say it's one of those albums that really got me into electronic music.

So much love for FSOL. I think the first thing I heard of theirs was Papua New Guinea which I loved but I couldn't really get into anything else they'd done. Years later a friend put Lifeforms on and I thought "Who the fuck is THIS? This is awesome" and was blown away it was FSOL. Then I got into their other stuff as well, they'd been brilliant all along, just a few years ahead of what my mind could take in

If we're posting gems of theirs, couldn't leave out their stuff as Yage

Pretty much feel the same way.

Seems like Dead Cities is usually considered their tour de force.


What with stuff like this and all:

My username is named after one of their best songs from the archives collection.

I've always liked Tales of Ephidrina(and the predator sound samples in it) and Lifeforms. Lifeforms gets kinda old tho because it's long. There's a track off ISDN called Dirty Shadows that I feel like whoever composed Zerg music for Starcraft: Brood War was blatantly inspired by.

Accelerator is pretty terrible though.

Thought I'd bump this thread. Been listening a lot to this and its succeeding track. Very, very imposing and influential stuff for me personally.

You just caught 2 songs of my FSOL top 3! I'd like to add For Max These to me are the representation songs for what I see as Ambient. With every release they make I'm hoping for songs like these but after 10+ years I came to the conclusion it's an utopia.

To me they have something similar to BoC. I guess it's their uniqueness as musicians and their interesting personalities.

I like FSOL, but I haven't listened to them as much recently as I used to... I suppose I go through phases with ambient music.

Room 208, from Lifeforms, is probably one of my favourite electronic songs, although I rarely go back to the album nowadays. In regards to their "ambient sound" I lean a lot more towards "Environments II", which is possibly my favourite album from recent times (5 years is recent, right?)[/url]

Agree with that one as well.

It's a pretty awesome feat that these great tracks occur in a row.

Out of the blue I connect with FSOL on a whole different level. Been spinning the Lifeforms EP, Cascade, ISDN and Papua New Guinea here and they all sound more than amazing. No idea what happened, I used to think of those records as ok/pretty good stuff but something I'd easily pass on. Two nights ago I was listening to the Lifeforms album tired as hell and thought it sounded euphoric in that state, maybe that unlocked something in my brain.

This music has about as much detail as that of Boc, which is damn great. Every listen is different.

i stopped paying attention after dead cities, when they went all psych rock, but god EVERYTHING they did in the 90s is perfect. i guess they have released like 7 albums worth of unreleased stuff from that era, too?

Dead Cities is an odd one for me. Sometimes I really like it, sometimes I struggle to listen it through, like last night when I pressed stop by the latter half.

Put on Archives 1 inspired by your post, it sounds great, another record I've forgot about. I've 1-5 actually.. Btw, these album covers really put me off. They're atrociously ugly for the most part.

I love Dead Cities, closely followed by ISDN. Vivid memories of playing Wipeout 2097 way into the night, very stoned, whenever I hear 'We Have Explosive!'
