I have a good crop of CDs I'm looking to sell. I was wondering what the best way to go about doing this is. Ebay? Craigslist?

Also considering moving my mp3 collection off my computer and onto some upload service like iCloud. Has anyone done anything like this yet?

This all sounds like a really bad idea.

But seriously, don't get rid of all your CD's, and for God's sake don't move your digital files into the "cloud". You never know what whichever company you trust with your binary soul will do with your personal information and files, unless you spend an endless amount of time reading and cross-referencing the fine print. This is not fun. Plus, external hard drives are so cheap nowadays...

Agreed. Invest in an External Hard Drive if you're going with iCloud..just in case.

An ebay account is being prepared. I will let you know when I put something up.

I decided not to delete my Mp3's though. Instead I'm going to back my cd's up in FLAC before I sell them.

Keep your MP3s as backups. Hard drive space is cheap and even like 320kbps mp3s aren't that big. I got a 500 gig drive to store music on. I'll probably never fill it up.

I sell used CDs to a local record shop. For two reasons. First so I don't have to keep them around collecting dust. Second because I want to infuse local music listeners with more cool and interesting music they may not have been able to find otherwise. Since my city is real small and this is the only non-chain record shop most music nerds go there.

Doesn't seem worth your time to ebay them (at least individually) unless you have a few that might be rare first pressings/limited runs that would sell for $10 or more.

That's not a bad idea. I have some collections that I think I could get more online, but the standard, everyday items I think I may take to the local record shop.

Take them in spurts though. I used to work at an FYE. Any time someone brought me a SHITLOAD of used CDs and DVDs to go through, I'd become enraged because the employees have to check them one by one.

Also, I recommend taking them to a local CD shop. Not FYE if you can. They end up shipping a lot of things off. Especially obscure things. I'm surprised they've stayed open this long.

Yeah, We have an FYE here. I looked up some of the amounts FYE would give you if you sold to them and it seemed a little low. Also considered doing it in spurts, too. Seems like there is also a better chance for making money off them that way.

Sell 'em on eBay because if you do it correctly it'll be worth the effort! The key is to put up as many as you can! If you can't put up all your sales at once, pair the CDs you sell by artist similarity or complete discography. Sell each CD on it's own, not as a lot. I have sold around 400 CDs so far from my electronic collection and made close to $4,000 US total in the past 4 months.

I've been pondering something like iCloud too just for the convenience BUT and this is a big BUT:

DO NOT DELETE YOUR MP3s. It's amazing to me the trust that people put in technology companies - but you need to have a local copy. That way if Apple raises prices beyond your budget or changes its terms or whatever - you can always abandon them with little inconvenience.

Also Goiter - just out of curiosity - what made you decide to sell? Just find that you're only listening to the digital copies? Are you over music? Moving entirely to vinyl?

So like, I have a sizable NIN collection. What you're saying is put them all up at once but sell each item individually?

They would probably sell better as individuals as more people are probably looking for the rare Halos to complete their own collection. Especially the 3 We're In This Together singles that are quite rare. But who knows, you should just search ebay and other sites to see what the going price is for albums/eps and compare that to what you would sell them all for.
