yes. they are. I enjoy shooting them for recreation, but do not and have never hunted with them. It is sad that the only way to protect yourself in this country is to have one to defend yourself. that isn't going to make me buy one though. I was shocked when I heard this. very disturbing. I'm curious to see what mental state this guy is in.

On topic: This guy is a fucking psychopath and a tremendous asshole. Who sold this guy riot gear, an AR-15, a shotgun and ammo? This is why people need to prove their mental stability to acquire weaponry.
Yeah, they're going to have a bunch of whining about all this and then the gunman will get lynched/lethally injected, but seriously, when is the ACTUAL PROGRESS going to occur? Unless greater requirements are demanded from those purchasing weapons, shit like this is going to keep happening.
Also, I'm a bit surprised that not one other person in the theater was in possession of a sidearm. I wonder if Colorado has concealed carry permits.
Regardless, it might not have helped, what with the guy's body armor and whatnot. Pretty sad, this whole scenario.

I don't know, just seems to me like an atomic bomb can't be used for self-defense without creating massive problems, whereas guns often can.
But they've definitely caused more deaths. It's unfortunate that people have to fight wars. The technology they use to kill each other could be repurposed for something much more noble.

Of course, while the topic of this thread is sad, approximately 2500x more people (talking of children, here) die of starvation every day. Then there are the diseases, war, genocide, etc. that goes on everyday. This death toll in this tragedy is something some countries would call, should they only have such a death toll on a daily basis, "great progress".
But, it's close to home, so it hurts more to the average American.
On gun control.. There was a time when many citizens of a town had their own firearms for self-defense purposes, yet the local constable only had to have a billy club to enforce whatever law needed enforcing. Something along the way changed. When we find out what changed, I think we'll have our answer as to what to do about gun control. The same old arguments bring us to a stalemate.
For fear of it getting out of hand in squabbles, I think I regret making this thread.

no regrets waterbagel... I'd like to think we are civilized enough to discuss this without it getting out of hand. this is going to be a hot topic in the US for a very long time (it already has, but this has made it even more)

You know, now they might start having TSA-styled pat downs at movie theaters.
This horrible event is probably going to send everybody panicking way out of proportion and putting into play a bunch of unnecessary bullshit.
Meanwhile, just how few people want to look at the problem? People should take a word of advice from those who condemn the glorification of violence on the media. That sort of behavior certainly isn't helping slow these sort of things to any degree.

Well, you might want to let your dad know that he doesn't need to have his balls groped to be safe from terrorists.
Anyways, I've been dwelling on this thing ever since it occurred and can't really express how much I hate this guy who did this. He really should die by being shot in non-fatal locations and then bleeding out. I've never been one for revenge typically, but when someone kills 12/wounds 30+ people simply trying to watch a movie, they're an asshole beyond belief and really deserve to know what that feels like.

I was thinking about it, and why are there so many people complaining about the baby being brought there? I mean I don't really think late night movies are the best place for young children myself, but it's not like anyone goes thinking that something so terrible would happen. Regardless, wish there was something I could do to help everyone.
