another interesting thing i found is that 'Zoetrope' was a video software program for the Amiga computer, released around 1988...

whipped this up this morning, it's sort of in three parts in one track. the first two are the same sequence, i just used different voice settings for each. the third i just sort of tacked on, sounds pretty nice.

C64 running 'Instant Music' recorded as three clips in Live, then run through a filter ...

and on a possibly(??) related side-note, i see that 'Xentrix' was a UK-based Commodore 64 demo group. not sure if this means anything, but i don't think i've seen that brought up before.

yeah, i wasn't thinking that they were using quite it that early. by 1986 though, i'm guessing the C64 was a huge sucess through europe. and nobody was doing too much music-wise with a z80, Apple, or even Atari compared to the C64 at this point. if they used it then and it became a valuable tool to ...

ahh, a played synth bass. makes sense now. could explain the fourth voice in the recording, but that's a bit of a stretch. the rest just sounds to me like it could easily be a SID composition. just the way it's structured, doesn't seem like something you'd come up with in a normal sequencing ...

yeah, that's the thing. most of the time it doesn't sound like typical stuff, but this is one that i thought sounded like a tip-off. it's not like you need to make it sound like everyone else.

'Sac' sounds analog? mmm, the SID is just about as anaolg as any Juno, ESQ, or other DCO synth. and i'll ...

i guess that would be it, i really don't keep up with the track names unfortunately.

ehh, listening again i think there's four voices going. other than that i would almost swear that it was sequenced on a C64. if it's not, they're going a hell of a distance to make it seem like it is.

either way ...

there's more examples for sure, but what are your thoughts on track number 16 off 'a few old tunes'? seriously. this is a pretty obvious example, but there's a lot of tracks that 'meet the criteria' :D to have been done on a C64. there's also a lot which utilize only two or three voices, which is a ...

Re: hmm, i wonder if they compose on a Commodore 64?

sounds too thin to be boc.

ehh, you can do better than that. :D the SID isn't quite 'thin' compared to a lot of synths out there. some would even say it's rough and nasty.

mechanismj - now that is something, good show.

i stick to what i said for now, i think it fits a bit too well. of course ...

Im sorry, but I doubt they use a SID. That just seems really dumb that they would use one, not saying it isn't possible but I think that they are much more organic.

actually, this sentence seems really dumb, and naive on top of it. :D what is this 'sounds too 8-bit' jive? i've said exactly why i ...

ok, after playing around a bit... i have come to the conclusion that not only do they definitely use the SID, but that most of those meandering interludes we all love were done on the c64 as well!! no doubt in my mind at least. i'm running 'Instant Music' right now by Electronic Arts ('86) which ...

exactly - i've heard tons of sidtunes and never thought about this before today. i'd say just about all those are purely sequenced which is the norm, but the Cynthcart treats the c64 as just a synthesizer that's playable from the keys. all you can do with it is play notes like a usual synth, so they ...

haha. :D i understand how skeptical we all are, i have almost no doubt. not to say they use it in every song, but i wouldn't be surprised if it's in there quite a bit. dead on.

hmm, i wonder if they compose on a Commodore 64?

obviously they use other gear :D, but listen to these:

http://qotile.net/audio/cynth2.mp3
http://qotile.net/audio/cynth3.mp3

those are two demo clips for 'Cynthcart' which is a program for the c64's SID chip. i couldn't believe how 'boc' it sounded, i'm almost certain that they use some sort of ...

that's not what i'm implying, where did you get that?

while i do think there is some randomization involved, i believe how it's injected is in their hands. there's a lot of ways to control random events.

well, they're one of my top favorites also, but you can figure out what they're doing if you break it down. the early stuff (even some stuff up through Confield) was really quite simple.

here's some interesting stuff that one of the guys from em411/e-m came up with:
