Left side of below is what they (Boards of Canada) do in hardware and analog methods. Right side is what I would do in a modern DAW and with plugins instead of hardware to replicate what they do. I could be wrong on some or all of this.

I bet they are preparing to drop a new album by the end of this year, new sounds and a new approach, and I'm sure they are also preparing an alternate reality game to promote the release of their next studio album like they did for Tomorrow's Harvest (2013)!
