So what is __twoism's thoughts on this?

Personally, I have no problem downloading any music off torrents or whatever. The way I see it, the consumer benefits from hearing music they otherwise couldn't afford to buy or wouldn't have heard any other way, while the artist benefits from having their names out there more, which often leads to getting picked up by a label and/or increased album sales, at least for the more underground bands anyway.

However, I DO buy albums that I really like. CDs have superior sound quality to MP3 (not enough to justify getting FLAC, but yeah), and it's nice to have the complete package with the cover art and the like.

I agree too, I think people who can't afford music shouldn't be disallowed to listen to their favorite musicians. Problem is, people get accustom to downloading, then when they do have money they tend to not think about actually going and purchasing the music.

I try to purchase new releases, but older releases I tend to not buy as much and end up just downloading. I would if I had the cash, but since I'm young and poor....ya know. I also try to buy music from less popular artists, and download from the more mainstream artists.

Without file sharing i would not know about any of my favorite artists.

And I buy all my favs new albums.

So put two in two together, it still made them money!

I download old stuff that i used to have or my vinyl cos I don't have the time or patience to transmogrify it. I'll download new stuff to check it out, if I like it I buy it.

Maybe people and the industry should let of go the idea that a good musician deserves to become rich. Just a thought.

I'm much more tempted to buy CD's from "amateur" artists; for example I have bought about 6 CD's from artists on this forum alone. When I do that it feels I'm adding something. On the other hand, spending 20 euro's for a commercial CD in the store when I can listen it on the internet in MP3 (I don't buy the CD > MP3 argument, I wouldn't hear the difference if my life depended on it), feels equal to throwing the money into the trashcan. I used to do that for a while but since I found out that I together with many people do so because we're (sub)culturally conditioned to think that those hard working multi millionaire artists "deserve" it or something, I quit doing that and will only do it again with very special releases. As I implied in the first sentence of this post, maybe it's time for a paradigm shift in the music industry.

Yep, I've purchased all my Boards of Canada. Although, there is music I like, but I would never purchase... 100% agree.

I either get torrents or buy from an online mp3 store like the warp store or beatport. Sometimes I don't mind having physical CDs but it seems like a waste of money. They tend to get scratched up or lost if you take them anywhere away from home. You end up using mp3 format to listen to music anyways. So it's like why bother with the physical format.

For supporting the artist I would like to have more opportunities to see live shows. But it almost always requires traveling when it comes to electronic.

If I wasn't broke as a joke, I would be more than happy to support every artist whose music I obsess over. But luckily, the fact that I am broke doesn't prevent me from listening to all this great music I wouldn't have found out about otherwise. Obviously, it sucks for the artists, but unless I'm stealing a physical object, I don't feel like I'm really stealing anything, especially if a record collection doesn't fit into my budget anyway. I go to shows, whatevs. /rationalization.

i download stuff and i love it, because it's free and easy to do. i don't think i'm in the right morally or... socially or whatever. i just do, because it's easy. same reason i'd hop a fence - because it's in my way and i'm physically capable of it.

Now we have to press more!" the industry would like to think that every instance of a steal is the loss of a potential buy - which is not the truth. i never once had the slightest intention of buying the full discography of Led Zeppelin.

in addition to which, i think what changed is the way people think about and use music overall - not so much their buying and stealing habits overall. to give a personal story - i used to pirate music whenever i wanted it when i was a teenager, but i would still go to hot topic and blow $10 or $15 on some stupid industrial comp CD on the weekend. nowadays i rarely ever buy a record except if it's an mp3 download, a BoC release, or a small-time independent artist (there are precious few artists i care about having a physical copy of the album for - basically it's BoC, Odd Nosdam, and artists I know personally).

i was going to elaborate on that, but i lost my train of thought. oh well, it's already a text-wall, better end it there.

the sad reality is i am a fucking music fiend and i couldn't support/pay for everything i seek out, but at the same time i cannot stop myself. this weekend i scooped up a ton of '80's funk just because i HAD to. if i could support every album with my hard earned money i would in a heartbeat, because there are artists out there that really are broke as a motherfucker and have like 6 kids to support and are so talented and humble and honest about what they do it's pretty fucked up to just take some easy shit and not give back to them.

that said...i believe i have more than done my share to support artists. in fact, back when mp3's weren't even alive i was spending rent money on tapes, records and cd's. i even bought music instead of food some days. the amount of tapes, records, and cd's i have is retarded and dropping a couple hundred dollars every week starts to get really hard to do when you start getting older. one day i stored my shit in a storage facility, came back a month later and poof....all of it gone. since then i am very very selective about what i pay for. the alternatives are pretty good and if you have spending money on the regular and do not have a boat load of financial responsibilities i see no reason why you shouldn't support artists more than not. just my opinion.
