This enigmatic electronica duo, comprising brothers Mike Sandison (b. Michael Sandison, 14 July 1971, Scotland) and Marcus Eoin (b. Marcus Sandison, 27 May 1973, Scotland) reportedly derive their collaborative moniker from the, National Film Board of Canada whose nature/socio-political documentaries they (supposedly) watched as infants, when their parents relocated to Alberta, Canada to work. These grainy films influenced the mood and ambience of their early singles "Hi-Scores" and "Aquarius" (on the Skam label), and their albums Twoism (of which only 100 copies were initially pressed), Music Has The Right To Children (1998), Geogaddi (2002) and The Campfire Headphase (2005).

Much of Boards Of Canada's output could appropriately be utilized as soundtrack material for natural history programming. With their lovely melodies and hip-hop derived crunchy percussion, Boards Of Canada certainly draw inspiration from like-minded Warp Records labelmates (Autechre, Plaid), yet the duo imbue their own down-tempo music with a curious sense of nostalgia and childlike wonderment. On one track, a treated child's voice seems to be declaring "I love you, Mum." This poignant infant speech seems engineered to trigger a sense of loss - both Sandison and Eoin have acknowledged an acute nostalgia for their childhoods, maintaining that the main source of their music is a refusal to accept adulthood. Advertisment soundtracks, corporate jingles and the production aesthetics of late 60s and early 70s folk artists have also been asserted as overt influences. The duo claim to litter their music with subliminal messages. Though cut through with a slightly sinister undercurrent, Boards Of Canada's music is sometimes cute and always endearing - descriptions not normally applied to techno recordings. Now based in the Pentland Hills, Scotland where they apparently live and record in a refurbished nuclear bunker, Sandison and Eoin are notably part of a wider arts collective Music70, who create short films, animations and paintings with no commercial impetus.

There are numerous pages out there (registries) that have had abandoned nuclear bunkers for sale in the past (and present).

There are many old and dissused nuclear bunkers in scotland, the "secret bunker" being one of many. It belive it was recently refurbished and is now a tourist attraction, but it was closed when I was in the area and took a look.

I have been in there taking photos a few times and its scairy as hell.

I clearly remember reading an interview BoC did that when someting along the lines of this:

Interviewer: Does making music in a nuclear bunker affect your music at all?
BoC: LOL, its not realy a bunker just a name that our friend gave our studio!

But that conflicts with the Warp page...
