Merck contracted Tycho

Post by Aesthetics »

I really thought Merck had style....

This is the most unexpected move Merck made over the years and I'm not really joyous about it.

What's the background to this? I only know Tycho from his Myspace page. Is his stuff really frowned upon or something? Care to explain?

musically, he's great IMO. but there apparently seems to be some rivalry or something between the 2 sets of fans, or something. i try not to pay attention to it all.

It's because he denied that he was influenced by BoC, something that happened on his forum about 1 year ago.
I have nothing against clones or artists who are heavily influenced by other artist, as a matter of fact I really like to hear the influences of BoC in other musicians their work, just don't deny it imo.

Plus the artwork, songtitles and even his profile picture at Discogs are 100% mimic.

i actually liked his stuff a lot, but then i heard he denied boc as an influence.
it says on his myspace page that his music "sounds like" boc, so either he is taking the piss or else he is a blatant rip off, and from what i've heard it's the latter. fuck him, he's a joker.

Hmmm... Well I just listened to that 'Sunrise Projector' (Sunshine Recorder) track on his website... There can't not be a BoC influence... Seriously. Denying the obvious inspiration for his work has effectively alienated most of the people who would be fans of his work.

Isn't Merck going under at the end of the year anyways?

That is plain daft. It strikes me as a lack of confidence in his own work that he has to deny any BoC influence. If you rip someone off the natural instinct is to cover your own tracks. :?

no seriously, i like tycho's music but he's as hell influenced by boc. (isn't this also on his myspace? here it is: Influences Boards of Canada, Ulrich Schnauss, Manitoba, DJ Shadow, Zero 7, Cinematic Orchestra)

Even if he finally admit it... he still apes BoC style fully, something that is not done imo.

Sunrise Projector

Let's see if he finally found a style of his own with this new Merck release.

 Lol. Tycho gets no love on this board.

I actually like some of his tracks.. but.. you know... are there really any new electronic artists that don't owe something to BOC?

I had never heard of Tycho before (sheltered life). After reading what you all had to say about him, his obvious BoC influence and ready denial of it, I had to listen. I can no doubt hear the influence.

I really want to dislike him... But I can't. Not only are his tunes pretty good (they're no BoC, mind you... and the "Sunshine" ripoff... what's up with that?) But his design is pretty top notch, too (even tho there are some BoCesque imagery and 70's fell stuff going on). Being a designer, I appreciate how difficult it is to make shit look good. Being artists, most of you no doubt know how difficult it is to make shit sound good. So this guy does both? So I say it again... I find it hard to hate him. Maybe if I met him and he was a dick it would be easier....
