An Idea of Why Album is Taking So Long...

Post by Mark Geranium »

Now this is just a completely random idea, and I can see people picking holes in it in a matter of posts.

Possibly the reason why it has taken roughly 4 years for BoC to release everything is that they've had to start completely from scratch.

When they were making 'Geogaddi', for example, they had around 64 songs and 400 fragments to choose from (Wikipedia fact, probably wrong). Obviously they were all first stage and needed a lot of polishing, etc, but they had existing music to work on, and even then it took them 2 years.

Perhaps they've gone through all of their music folders in Hexagon Sun and found they don't have many tracks to work on or don't think are worth working on (they've always been uncertain about what people would think of some of their tracks, especially with the Campfire Headphase).

So maybe they had to start roughly from scratch, making brand new tracks, and that's why it's taking them so long. Or perhaps I'm talking rubbish and it's going to be a double album. Or perhaps I'm wrong twice and they're making a normal album that's really good.

Or perhaps they'll infuriate us all and release a 3-track EP instead.
Porridge?

No, that's wrong.

MDG: "the new album has been held up over the past year by one or two issues outwith the band's control, but it is finally coming out in 2010."

Well telling from their interviews the guys are pretty prolific, are always working and building a collection of tracks, and have a huge back-catalog stored on various mediums.

To my understanding Geogaddi wasn't like MHTRTC in the sense that they didn't have all these great songs laying around from the previous decade that they could kind of refine and consolidate into a masterpiece, along with tracks made just for that album. So with Geogaddi I think they did start from scratch for the most part, and I think they essentially start from scratch on every new album. Sure, they might go into the back catalog and find something that fits the feel or concept of a new album but from what they've told us it sounds like each album is a new creative enterprise and what delays the releases, besides record company bull-shit, is them going over this large catalog and narrowing it and refining it to fit a certain idea of what the album should be like; quality control.

I think with this new album they will have had to put in a lot of effort into evolving their sound without losing the boc feeling. I can see the guys really pushing it in the studio for this one and making some strange creations; making something that really sounds "new" but has continuity with the old if you know what I mean,...that can be a long, arduous process I think.

So in my opinion its more about expanding their boundaries creatively than how much music they have lying around. They don't want to just throw pre-existing material at consumers, these guys are artists.

Its taking so long because there are only so many TV idents created in the 60s and 70s. Theyve got some from the 80s they've not used but theyve buried the tapes in peat and they've got to wait for them to decay

One of the bro's has been raising children; that's probably alot more fun (and demanding) than satisfying our needs by pushing a release - I imagine:)

I need to read through mdg's statements properly, thanks for the quote. I like the idea that they're going to try changing it while keeping it BoC, that would mean that it's not going to change too much, but we're not faced with a Geogaddi or MHTRTC 2.

Lol at the idea that they've run out of 60's TV to use, they'll probably have to go for obscure sci-fi and go for quotes from Star Trek, Doctor Who or The Prisoner...
Porridge?

No, that's wrong.

They both have day jobs at Centre Parcs and this season has been really busy because of the credit crunch a lot more people are holidaying at home, it's really impinged on their recording time.

I agree with isawdrones, they never give us more of the same. For all the press about sampling kids shows, they basically dropped after their first album. So it doesn't really matter how many old unused songs they've got stored up, they're not going to fill up the new album with leftovers. At least, not more than a few sampled seconds a piece.

issues: The warp20 celebrations filled up warp's 2009 agenda. It's hard to imagine that autechre would have found the time to make an entire album during that busy period so I it might have been the shelve as well. And dropping big-name releases would have distracted us from providing a decent warp20-turnover. Autechre is dropped in march, jim lidell followes in may, perhaps after that...

we'll never know what's the reason, that's ok,
as long as we all live happily ever after.

And Flying Lotus in May as well.

I'm hoping for a June / July release which would imply an announcment in April / May (i'm counting 2 months in advance).

Warp20 might have got something to do with the whole delay, indeed. But it could be something entirely else too... we'll never know. Let's just all happily await the new transmission from beyond the hexagon stars. :)
