lust for a new boc albums hits me in waves... i won't think of a new album for months and then one day it'll hit me and i'll check different sites for news... but always nothing. boc withdrawal can be so painful at times.

I wonder what they think about the recent trend of chillwave music and hauntology? So many subgenres can be traced back to Boards of Canada...

Basically, think heavy boc-influenced nostalgia but with an added kind of... opiated queasiness. Sadly reminiscing over things that may or may not have actually happened. Comparing the present to ideas of the future from 20 years ago. All the past's possible futures haunting the present, is the general idea.

the trend in a nutshell is sampling/covering electronic disco and pop ballads from the 80s and filtering it heavily to make it sound more atmospheric and "chill"

the hauntology thing spans different kinds of past music that was commonly used as stock/library music. ive seen examples of BBC radiophonic like above, as well as italian film soundtracks(like broadcast!), 80s synthesizers, and even ballroom orchestras gone terrifyingly drone.

hello everyone. this is sort of a reintroduction. it's been so long since i posted on here i forgot my original username, and much has changed since then anyway.

i really like washed out, but i hope the new boards of canada still sounds more like boards than it does this chillwave stuff. neon indian directly listed boards of canada as an influence in a recent interview though.

Personally I don't associate the musical impact of BoC with Oneohtrix Point Never at all. I think OPN is a completely different beast. OPN is another rare, special, phoenix of a music project like BoC is, but I don't get the same or even similar feelings from OPN as I do from BoC. I think they are very very different.

yeah i hear you... although i think he shares that same 'the past inside the present' thing with the boards, he's definitely his own beast. honestly i was lumping him in with people like ghost box and the whole library music thing, which imo has more a practical and direct similarity to boc.

the whole hauntology thing is quite hard to pin down, it's not really a genre or anything, more just a word for lots of people doing different things with similar ideas in their heads

I think it's really great, im gonna listen to more of him right now. It sounds like BoC indeed, but I dont care, only makes waiting for the new album alot easier.
