Done with BoC

I'm done with them. Not in a mad way or a mean way, I'm just quietly walking out on them. I don't get it. I used to really like them but know every time I try to listen to them, It doesn't feel the way it used to, in fact, the only IDM bands I am still listening to are Plaid and Autechre. I just don't feel the same awsome feelings I used to get and it's making me sad, so I'm just going to stop listening. Does anyone else feel the same way? Or is it just my noobish thoughts.

I felt exactly the same then about a year later I got majorly back into them again and have been ever since.

I understand the feeling. In fact, as a fan, I never got into any of their first two albums completely. It was the particular tracks that impacted me that made me a huge fan. I kind of got tired of their sound after listening to them for like three years. There was a point when boc was 95 percent of what I was listening to, for about a year I guess.

then I gave them a rest, and I can appreciate again. Thats my experience; I bet when the new album comes out you might give it a listen or two though, right? haha.

That's pretty uplifting!

I was just pondering, what if you went deaf in a horrible accident and the next day the new album came out. I would just scream and cry until my mouth started bleeding. Isn't that just a depressing thought?

I can see where you're at. Just because you're not listening to a bunch of IDM doesn't mean it's a bad thing, I just means that you probably need a break.

Try finding some different bands to listen to in the meantime, there's plenty of awesome music that isn't IDM.

I've been heavily listening to BoC for years and years and still going strong. I'm not sick of a single tune of theirs. Am I weird?

There's so much about this band to learn about. That's the appeal to a lot of fans- all the mystery and history behind this group. And what they've done in the music world is just so incredible, it pulls you in and you listen and listen and read about it and talk about it. Then next thing you know it, you completely know Boards of Canada like the back of your hand, and it becomes just that- the back of your hand. And then the excitement starts to go away :S And although you may come back to it, and still appreciate it, it's never like it was when you first discovered it... when I first learned about this band, it was like nothing I have ever seen or heard before... pure magic

It's true. And it reminds me of ...honestly, love, and psychedelics, at the same time. You fall in love with someone, passion flares up, everything blossoms like a flower, and then.... it wilts. it always does. There's a song by Robotanalysis called Middleend that contains a vocal sample about "middles" in relationships (something to the tune of, a lot of people are good at beginnings but bad at middles, but practically all of life is the middle). It's if you can weather the disappointment of the wilting of the flower and still love it for what it is. And as for psychedelics, I know some people who still chase that dragon, still drop acid and mushrooms all the time, they swear they're learning new things and it never gets old. Me, I learned my lesson, it does get old, and you do learn what you were gonna learn, and it is over at some point. Everything ends at some point. Everything settles into place. BoC settles into place. For me, now, they're just another interesting band. That doesn't change the past, it doesn't change what they once were to me. They opened up huge new doors for me, musically. Indirectly because of BoC I discovered whole genres of music I never thought I'd appreciate, that aren't electronic or anything.

I don't listen to any BoC at all anymore...at least untill the next album.

We should stop speculating what the album is about. Mike is reading this forum going "aaawh maaan, Marcus! Call of the London Symphony Orchestra and Beck, they are expecting it!".

I have these periods in which I dont listen to them alot, and just discover new music. However, I always tend to fall back into BoC. But it's never been the way that I BoC was like 95% of what I listen to. I just love their music, and that's it.

Indeed! I would never have known anything like IDM, ambient techno, post-rock, shoegaze, y'know all those indie genres without BoC.

And yes, there are still a handful of tracks by them that give me that "magic" vibe. Pontiac Dream, Oscar Eye, Bocuma/Roygbiv, Julie Candy, too many to mention.

I listen to them quite frequently and amn't sick of them, and as many people have said, BoC is just such an interesting band with so much stuff to learn about them..it's hard not to constantly be intrigued.

threads like this are weird to me. you shouldnt feel obliged to forever love a band. i know its already been said before, but if you don't feel like listening to boards of canada, dont. you can listen to anything you want! there is plenty of other awesome music coming out to love! boards of canada are usually not on my mind. i dont feel guilty about this. i dont feel like i need to make a big deal about it. but every once in a while, i'll get the urge to listen to one of their albums. so i do!

i can definitely see where youre coming from. boards of canada meant so much to you at one point, and now, not so much. it's like that with everything! i couldn't watch bladerunner every single day, or even every month for that matter. its still one of my personal favorite movies. i went through this same realization as you did a while back. oh yeah, boards of canada, they are great.. meh! but some times you're just not in the mood for things. even something as awesome as boards of canada. but luckily, you don't have to completely walk away from musicians or albums. you can always come back and listen to any music you want to! any time you want to! this mindset will probably help with the ridiculous wait until some new music from them!

What on earth is the sense in deciding that you're "done" with a band other than to announce it on a message board? It's music, you listen to it or not. If you're currently tired of it you don't need to officially kick it out of your life Has Twitter convinced people that every thought needs to be turned into an announcement?

I go through periods of not listening to BOC as much as i used to. Going through it right now as a matter of fact! It's not a bad thing at all. Over the past year or so i've found excitement/happiness in listening to artists like Bibio, Lone & Toro Y Moi. As well as re-discovering old motown tracks, finding AFX tracks i've never heard before, and listening to a lot of Wisp.

I understand why people feel like this. I did at one point... Then I realized that if they would never make another album, who cares. They have a huge library to listen to, so many memories, so many feelings. I have been listening to a lot of their older tracks and falling in love with their rawness all over again. If the new album comes out this year, awesome! If it doesn't? Oh well. I will never stop listening to them.

We all go through it man. Don't turn your back on em. When the new album comes out you will be back. Till then? Adiós!

P.S. Go back to the old tunes... Kiteracer 2 will bring you back.
