I was thinking of Music Is Math, but Julie and Candy might be interesting. It's a tough one due to the complex, dense sound. That opening bit always reminded me of some sort of calliope at an old-timey circus.

I just finished "Julie And Candy" this afternoon and will be going on to "Smokes Quantity" next as requested by Sandpaper.
I took J&C in a different direction and did it in a sort of drum n' bass fashion. So far I have about 22 min. of BOC covers. I am going to shoot for at least 60 minutes worth and then put the whole shebang up as a free download.
Stay tuned.

I use a combination of Logic Audio & Reason using software synths and samplers. I also record guitar and some drum parts that I play.

It's seems like for this kind of music that Logic is the best software. What kind of Mac are you running the software on? And what interface are you using to get into the computer? You run Reason on a Mac too? Just interested because How people get clean recordings as they record acoustic guitars and acoustic drums. Thanks!!

I am running on a first generation G5 tower that is now 6.5 years old. It does pretty well with 3GB of ram, but more would be nice. I would like to start using RECORD, but it only runs on Intel Macs, so I have to wait until I can upgrade. I recorded my first few albums using an Audiophile USB interface and a blue and white Mac G3, but did all the others after that with the 24 bit built-in internal audio on the G5. I use a Jamlab interface to bring in my guitar parts and use Guitar Rig 3 software to get the sort of tone I am looking for. I use no microphones for the most part. My drums are a Yamaha DXT electronic set from the late 90s. It does not get much use in my recordings these days. I would love to have a nice acoustic kit, but living in a condo makes playing real drums difficult.

I asked becasue I'm in the same position of living in an apartment so getting what I want/need has to also fit into realm of me not being able to crank amps to level 10!!

Not a big fan of any of the guitar software. To my ears its all garbage compared to warm tube amps!! especially after having the experience of having recorded in a studio the old way on reel to reel with a room with two 200 watt heads and 4 4x12 cabinets with 8 SM57's positioned all about to get the fullest sound possible.

I saw one guy who ran a mixer into his Mac, but he wasn't making records.

So what would you recommend as far as Mac's (model and how much Ram) and interfaces considering I want to mic my amps for guitar and bass, and possibly even an acoustic drum kit down the road, though right now I'm looking at the SPD-30 as my electronic kit.

Yeah. Nothing beats hanging a good mike over the face of a quality tube amp. I do not record much guitar as my playing is not all that great. If you want expandability for things like ProTools cards and the like then a Mac Pro tower is the way to go, but if all your stuff is external, you could probably use and iMac as they support up 16 GB of ram. Heck there are a lot people doing great things with just a laptop these days. Here is a good comparison page of Mac models.

I agree it's just a tool. And I tend (want to be) more analog dependent than computer dependent. But I also can't put a Steinberg piano in my apt so I know i need a combo of hardware and software. The hassle so far is finding the right combo of hardware software. With a Mac and Logic I can do my own music with the added flexability to do other stuff like video games.

As for PC vs Mac: I just about had it with my PC. first the recording software drove me nuts. getting the right sound card drove me nuts. then some internal motor broke. the it got a virus 3 times. plus the software synths and bundles i did dabble with just plain sucked!! All which made creating music a counterintuitive hassle and chore.

Thanks once again for your input. I always like to hear other people's opinions and ideas -- sometimes they actually do pan out.

But DON'T change Corsair!!! Don't make it dub or anything else. That's the beauty of the piece is it's simplicity and haunting emotional impact. You take that away and it might as well be an entirely different song.
